As lung volume reduction surgery removes the infected parts of a lung, can the remaining "healthy" part then become infected in the way the removed part was, or will it remain in a healthy non-infected state?

I suppose the answer would be how you contracted the lung problem in the first place. But Julie is right, the BLF are best qualified to answer quickly for you, or your consultant when you see them. :)

Hi Saul, it's not a case of "infection", it's the removal of damaged parts. Here is a link to a BLF article about the procedure which may help:-

Thank you everyone.

I intend to discuss this with my consultant but I just thought I`d ask on this site as so many of you seem very knowledgeable on this matters having experience medical procedures yourself.

I have Bronchiectases and had two lobectomies when I was 12 years old.I remained very healthy until five years ago when the Bronchiectasis came back to the healthy part of the lungs. I am now 70 so was clear for over 55 years! So would recommend the op!

Thank you for that information. By "lobectomy" do you mean removal of a complete lobe or just infected parts of it?

It was the complete lobe, one on the left and one on the right. Two altogether. Hope this helps Saul.

Thanks. Your a great testimonial for that op. I hope the return of the condition does not affect you greatly. Good luck for the future.

My son had 20% of his lung taken away for a rare tumour, the surgeon said the lung tissue would grow back by 10%.
