A touch of nostalgia from the original singer.

I love this "scary" video :)

I thought it was recorded by 'Frankie Laine', when I was a 'Nipper' !

I thought that too. Was it the theme tune for a western on TV.

I also thought that, but can't remember for the life of me!

But: It was written by Stan Jones in 1948

Recorded by Vaughn Monroe in 1949

Recorded by Frankie Laine in 1963

I am informed by Wikawhatnot !

That's right, Vaughn Monroe was the original singer, the best version I still believe :)

That stirred a few memories. Whiplash, Wagon Train, Bonanza. Than you :-) Alison

I've been trying to get my husband to take a look at what gets put on this site to no avail. As soon as he heard this tune, he was there sitting beside me singing along with a soppy look on his face.

A bit of nostalgia is a wonderful thing :)

I do read your poems and jokes to him but because I start to giggle and laugh he gets fed up waiting for me to finish :)

You have surprised me, I always thought that Burl Ives was the original singer of this song released in 1949.

I always loved this song by the Outlaws, but my very favourite version is a bit more modern, it is by Spiderbait from the movie Ghost Rider. You can see them all on You tube.

I believe you are right, according to Wikipedia Burl Ives recorded it on February 17, 1949. It Stayed in the charts for 6 weeks and got to number 21

Vaughn Monroe recorded it a month later on March 14, 1949, his version stayed in the charts for 22 weeks and got to number 1. Which probably explains the confusion.

Burl Ives went on to record another version though.

In all there have more than 50 different versions recorded, many instantly forgettable :)
