Health and Safety with cleaning sprays and fluids.

I am quite new to this site so forgive me if this topic has already been aired.

Cleaning sprays and fluids come with a health and safety risk. You can always contact

the manufacturer and ask for a copy of their health and safety report on the product.

Some come with the BIG X . . for example Domestos, some Dettols and may other brands.

Think hard before using them. Or purchase a Vapour Mask. The same goes for decorating, paint for instance with tell you to open your windows etc.

A good reminder Ros! I lost a good copd friend last Christmas after he decided he was going to clean his carpets, I dont know what cleaner he used but he died a couple of days later in hospital.I think oven cleaner is a particularily bad one for most of us. huff x

The carpet cleaning problem happened to me....this was a couple of years ago, I couldn't get my breath and was terrified making it worse. Makes me think I have had this longer that I thought :(

Thank you Huff, another thing to remember is not to dry wet washing on radiators.

It is horrendous how many water vapours are released. Anyone with a tumble dryer and condenser will confirm how much water they have to empty of the integral water trap.

Its best to avoid some of the stronger cleaning agents and go green where you can, better for the lungs and breathing.

Think there is a blog about natural cleaning tips somewhere, here or on the old blf. Jo posted something some time ago. Simple things like vinegar, baking soda, lemon can be used for most all cleaning.

Here is one link that may come in useful for making cleaning greener:

Hi Ros,we never dry on the radiators,we only try to use greener agents if possible, furniture polish is not good for me,( wife thinks its my excuse for not doing any polishing ) when I do clean the oven ( which is my job ) I always wear a dust mask and have windows and doors open.aerosols bad aswell.

Hi John, rather than a dust mask use a 'Vapour Mask'.

AND yeah I know the feeling, I have never been lazy in my life,

now I appear to be. I most def have given up cleaning agents, I can

actually feel the vapours on my chest.

An idea about cleaning ovens: Get yourself a handheld steamer, they are

just brilliant for cleaning all sorts of things. From shower screen, ovens, around

taps . . . on and on I could go with how brill they are. Even remove stains

from carpets. AND not expensive.

Well worth it.

If you are on ebay you can get them or go along to your DIY store.

I doubt if chemists sell them as they are more called for in the working

industry. A good one is usually £10 and over.

Even for curtains, blinds, clothing etc.

So easy, no real effort required. Ditch the oven cleaner :0)

And good on you,

Well done for equality. lol

Best idea of all is not to clean the oven :)

And use the cleaning wipes so no spray at all :)

The only things I use are my trusty steam cleaner, vinegar, lemon, salt and a few other kitchen cupboard items. All these clean my home, kill bacteria, and keep it smelling nicely :)

I use my wife for cleaning,so no smelly problems for me.

I went to buy a car yesterday and when I sat in it I had to leave the door open because of the smelly. It will be valeted before I pick it up and they have said they will not use any chemicals, hope I don't get charged for the extra elbow grease they will use ;) Keep smiling.

Hello all you guys, I was in hospital a year ago not for COPD but my UC.

Anyway to cut a boring story short, the lady in the next bed had COPD was on a mask.

During the time we were in there we chatted, with me already having COPD I asked her if she used cleaning fluids. The answer was yes, she was very house proud . . . I

Find that not enough information is given about the hazzards of cleaning fluid as in the COSHH regs. Always worth reading labels on products or use, as brilliantly said above, use vinegar, lemon and a hand held steamer.

And good luck with your new car Carole. Sadly think that unless you have made an agreement with the seller you are more than likely to be charged? Did you seal the deal with a Valet? They normally cost about £80 squid.
