Hi guys after being diagnosed on April 2nd of this year I noticed that many of you were talking about FEV so asked my Doctor today he said I have FEV1 69% and FVC 66 I don't have a clue sorry can anyone help me please x

You are going to last for years. While a FEV of 69% is not brilliant it is not too bad either.Some on here are 20% and I myself am 31%. So look forward to a long and happy life. One tip. Stay off of the American sites, they will frighten you to death. You can also phone the BLF helpline, they are excellent on there. Bobby x

I had my diagnosis in March and my FEV1 is 62% and my FVC is 63% and the consultant said it was moderate COPD. I saw the nurse today at my surgery's COPD clinic to discuss how I was getting on with Spiriva and other things and she said I was mild although she was the one who showed me the consultant's letter with my diagnosis! I'm really pleased to ready Phillips1's reply because it looks as though I should last years too .

what is your present status now of your FEV1 % & FVC%? Because by findings is same as like you. yet feels short of breath though taking medication.

69% FEV means that you can blow 69% of the air out of you lungs in 1 second, if you could blow 85% of the air out of your lungs in 1 second you would be considered normal.

You are around 16 % off normal.

I just double checked the figures fev1 of 80% is consider

To be normal not 85 % this is good news for you because now you're only around 11% off normal, you're getting better already..lol

My mum is FEV of 14% and her FVC is 39%, so you have a long way to go yet :-).

Don't smoke eat well and try and keep reasonably fit, and as you say, you will last for years

my fev1 says 2.67

fev/fvc ratio is 62.0

where my fev1 says 2.67 what do the 2 . before the 67 mean

i am moderate but dont have a clue what above means or how bad i am

More good news for you taffy - 80% is the figure for normal...now. But up until a few years ago 70% was deemed normal..!

Music - 2.67 is the measure of your output in litres per first sec (I think). To get to a percentage that the others mentioned, it needs to be compared to a norm, which varies by age, sex & height - ask your dr/nurse/receptionist if there is % figure quoted too.

There is usually 3 stated: 1)Fev1 (Forcibly Expelled Volume in the 1st second of the blow; 2)FVC - (F)forced (V)volume expulsion total (C)capacity ie first second plus the rest of the blow) & 3) FEV1/FVC one divided by the other for a ratio.

The last is the best measure as it compares the measure of how much you can blow out in the first second, but taking into account lung volume, which Fev1 alone doesn't.
