Recovery after Mitral Valve Replacement

A week since discharged from hospital after MVR. Healing well in general. 14 days since the actual operation.

For example my breathing is much better and I can even sleep on my back. Although i hear the ticking sound of the mechanical valve it stopped bothering me after the first day.

INR levels playing up and the nurses said its normal as it could take weeks or even months for warfarin to settle down with our body. Luckily the anticoagulant clinic is only 10 mins away from me. Yesterday I had to go twice.

Today GP will call me as I was told to book the GP within 10 days of discharge to check the medicines I am on (he will stop some of them like omeprazole, codeine and laxatives I guess)

My only issue so far is that I had achilles heal problem before the op and it came back which affects my mobility. In both heals plus on one of my toe. Nurses yesterday said it could be related to gout. Never expected that. She says after surgery uric acid builds up and it comes up in knees and feet. I don’t know if any members had similar issues?

Overall I am recovering well and looking forward to my new life.

Ken

Hi Ken

Really impressed with you being able to sleep on your back so soon.

It took me weeks and was so good when I managed it. My bum was sore from sitting upright in bed.

Keep up the good work and hope you get good results from your GP

Regards

Maisie

Thanks for your reply

Yes i had sore bum last week but now all ok. Off the laxatives as bowel movement back to normal as well.

Blood sugar levels played up right after the op. I was pre-diabetic but was never above 6.5 before. At hospital it went up to 12.5 went down to 6 then 11 then 7 and now normalised again.

Surgery does change the body. My only issue is my feet. Hope they will get better as well

It certainly does do strange things to the body and the mind. So pleased you’re doing well.

Such good news Ken. Yes, INR can take a while and mine is still not quite stable after 5 months. You seem very upbeat and positive which is great. If you have any down days, which can be expected, just come back on here for a chat. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for a kind reply. Yes positivity is the key. We will be fine eventually. This forum is a great place to get comfort. Hope you are doing well as well. Keep safe

Glad to see, on the whole, you're doing well after your op. Things will take time to settle down, but it must be a relief now that the waiting and the worrying about the op is over. I'm sure there will be good days and bad days, but each day is a step on your road to recovery. Your positive attitude will certainly help. Hope you can get your feet sorted out soon. That's one unexpected complication you could do without. Take care, and keep us updated on your progress

My son's doing ok thanks. Still no news, but they did just say march, with no provisional date, so he's hoping for a phone call within the next 2-3 weeks. Fingers crossed.
