Hello everyone, just wanted to ask which medications people have been prescribed after having a stent fitted, my dad is due to have one but is struggling to take both asprin and clopidogrel, they both really upset him and he takes lansoprazole which doesn't seem to help, has anyone else had this trouble and been prescribed an alternative to these as they are making him really unwell thank you x

Medications after having a stent
I'm on;Ticagrelor 90mg twice daily until June 2022.
Ramipril 2.5mg twice daily.
Aspirin 75mg dispersible one daily.
Isosorbide Mononitrate 60mg one daily.
Bisoprolol 2.5mg one daily.
Atorvastatin 80mg one daily.
Glyceryl Trinitrate Spray as required.
Lansoprazole 30mg twice daily, seem to work better than Ompeprazole.
I've got slight indigestion troubles with the "cocktail" and still get light headed when getting up from sitting, I'm seeing the cardiologist on Monday so hopefully we'll be looking at a slight adjustment to the meds I'm on.
Thank you for that info, good luck with th cardiologist x
They swapped me to esomeprazole. Works a lot better for me.
Hi thank you for your reply, What did you take before that and were you having stomach troubles because of the heart meds or did you have a bad stomach before that? if you don't mind me asking 😁 x
I have severe psoriatic arthritis so I’m already taking a cocktail of industrial strength immunosuppressants. These are notorious for causing gastritis. I was already taking esomeprazole. When I had the stent put in cardiology gave me the standard cocktail and swapped me to Lanzoprazole which just didn’t work as well for me. My GP swapped me back. I do, however, have dexa scans every few years to check bone density and take vit D supplements in winter.
Ramipril 1.25 1 x Aspirin 75 mg 1x
Bisoprolol 1.25 3x
Ezetimibe/atorvastatin 90 mg 1x
Lasoprazole 40? 1x (stomach buffer)
Ticagrelor 90 2x
^^The above is pretty standard. My cardio would like to up the dosage of both Biso and Ramipril but I've had some side effects (seem to be getting better) including dizzyness etc. But overall I'm tolerating it pretty well.
I think given my history I'll be on anti-cholesterol, biso and ramipril for a long time. But that's fine so long as I don't have another HR.
I also have a nitro patch but have been told not to use it, and I haven't had classical angina.
As for stomach problems, I have had reflux in the past on heart meds. This time around I've been watching my diet (eating more "whole" and milder foods) carefully and taking psyllium, both for its laxative and cholesterol controlling properties. (at the advice of a gastrointestinal specialist), and it seems my stomach is doing better.
After my heart attack and angioplasty I was prescribed Aspirin, clopidogrel Lansoprazole, Bisoprolol, 80mg atorvastatin and rivaroxaban. The last one because they could not put in a stent so had to make do with anticoagulants. After 10 months, I found that I was getting bad stomach pains etc.
A cardiologist changed the meds by stopping the low dose aspirin, reducing the statins to 40mg, and changing the Lansoprazole (which is a Proton pump inhibitor) to Famotidine which reduces stomach acid in a different way.
Apparently Lansoprazole can actually cause digestive problems as can Clopidogrel statins, and aspirin.
He also stopped Bisoprolol because the damage to my heart was not extensive so did not need protecting by a beta blocker.
Both Aspirin and Clopidogrel are things called anti platelet drugs. They help prevent platelets (components of blood which help blood clot e.g. after a cut) from clotting too much and therefore causing a clot in an artery. I was told by a cardiologist that if there is a choice between taking clopidogrel and aspirin go for the former.
You need to talk to a cardiologist, but it may be worth getting him to consider stopping aspirin and changing Lansoprazole. Apparently Famotidine is much more expensive, so that might also be an issue.
Good luck for your dad, angioplasty is really not a big deal for most people
An alternative to lansoprazole is famotidine which is not a PPI. I'm allergic to PPIs. Ticagrelor instead of clopidogrel.
I'm relieved that I'm not the only one allergic to PPIs. Just one tablet will disable me. 😯
I reacted badly to lansoprazple and GP insisted I must not have any of them ever. Doesn't leave much choice though.
On the very rare occasions that I get an upset stomach I use Gaviscon Advance. Fine if you like the taste - should be listed next to Marmite!
