Fatigue

Hi, I had my HA 4 weeks ago and been on 80mg atorvastatin since. I am tired all the time. Spoke to the cardiac rehab nurse who advised my to keep a week BP diary and send to GP. Spoke to GP and he said that GP would not be happy changing meds so soon and should be sent to cardiac nurses/consultant.

My joints ache, I have arthritis and all my NSAIDS were stopped when I had the HA and not sure new meds are making things worse? Paracetamol not helping much.

I am allowed to drive again today but feeling too tired to even drive or read a book. It seems that the side effects of most of the new medication is tiredness, alongside(what I believe to be) a low BP.

Is this normal? Am I tired due to not doing to much? Medication?

Hi,When I had my HA 10 weeks ago i was put on atorvastatin too. I was so so tired all the time. I was reduced to 40 my and things improved. I was very lucky I didn't get the muscle/ joint aches others have spoken about. Dreadful constipation whilst on 80 my though!! Speak to your gp or cardio rehab nurse to have the statin reduced. Good luck

I’d urge you not to rush to blame statins for the tiredness. That Was Unexpected is on the money. It takes time for your body to recover and to adjust to the meds. It might be necessary for your drugs to be changed. Note your symptoms and talk to your cardiologist. Good luck.

A lot of people blame medications for their feelings after what is a very traumatic experience. I suspect you are on a lot more than just statins, for example beta blockers and anti-platelet drugs as well as blood pressure medication. All of these might have some effects. 80mg atorvastatin will most likely drive your cholesterol 60% lower than it was before.

It may be different for you but my tiredness after a mild HA was driven by betablockers not statins. Daily measurements of your heart rate and blood pressure will help the cardiac team to understand how to adjust your medications.

4 months after my HA I am on 80mg atorvastatin and feeling fine, breaking up concrete over the weekend for example.

Hi,The advice you have received so far is spot on.

80 mg of the statin you were prescribed seems to be the gold standard after a HA.

Personally I didn't respond well to it and my dose was reduced to 10mg.

I also take a plant sterol, the yoghurt drink you find in most supermarkets.

This works for me, my cholesterol levels have reduced.

I have suffered from fatigue over the last 12 months, there are many factors involved for me. Medication can be one of them, depending on the severity of your HA, you can also do to much to soon.

I have 5 stents in the LAD and a very low EF, I was fairly fit prior to my HA, so pushed myself to quickly afterwards resulting in 2 stays in hospital, fluid on the lung and a heart beat stuck on148 .

After 12 months and an ICD fitted, I feel much better, can walk on the flat a couple of miles.

So a bit of a long one for you, but my message is listen to your body, if you come to a brick wall, then rest and gradually things will improve.

Regards,

Paul

I think 4weeks after a heart attack is a short time to change meds with me the main culprit was bisoprolol. Reducing it raises BP and heartbeat. But not yet and not without talking to cardiologist

I was exactly the same after my heart attack. It got so bad I could barely get out of the chair. In my case after I'd had time to physically recover a bit, it turned out to be the bisopralol but please don't rush to blame he tablets. By all means keep a record of your BP and of when you feel most tired but let your body start to recover first.. I did have to change atorvastatin later but not because of tiredness.

Hi, I have been on ATORVASTATIN for years, only recently after having been in hospital and having an angiogram & 2 stents put in, they were put up from 20mg to 80mg daily. I am tired alot but I think it is due to being on a steroid that's made me put on weight, plus having only been since April that I had the angiogram etc, plus on other meds. I am exercising which is helping.

Hi cooper Sorry for the delayed reply,i was on atorvastatin for 3 years,av got to admit its a great drug to prevent strokes and heartattacks,it took my drs 3 year to listen to me about the pain i was in everyday with my shoulders and arms, kept saying its wasnt the statins, till they finaly took a blood test to check for muscle wastage,2 days later i recieved a phone call to stop the drug straight away as the statins were wasting my muscles, they tryed me on simvastatin but that didnt agree with me either,so am currently not on any statins, and av has to mini strokes in the last few month, the statins do make you feel tired but also whats happened to you will also make you feel tired for some time, you need time recover,if the statins arent causing you damage then stay on them for now, there a life saver if you can tolerate them, hope av been some help

Take care x
