Burning sensation in ankles and lower legs

I get a burning feeling in my ankles and feet but only at night. It feels like sunburn.

I was wondering if it was related to the medication I take or another condition entirely. I take 10mg Bisoprolol, 200mg Amiodorone and 100mg Losartan.

Does anyone else have this problem? I have had it for a few weeks now and it hasn’t been too bothersome but it has got worse and wakes me up, feels more comfortable when I put a cold flannel on them. Only comes on in the middle of the night.

I have exactly that . In my case it’s is related to withdrawal from bisoprolol /atenolol ( I changed from one to the other because the withdrawal symptoms from bisoprolol were so severe) In my case it wakes me two or three times a night , always approximately the same time , accompanied by a minute or two of faster heart rate . As best as I can tell they are related to cortisol surges .Am guessing here, if you take your bisoprolol in the morning it’s possible the levels are dropping through the night and you are getting withdrawal symptoms, if you are sensitive to drugs as I am.

Bear in mind I am not a doctor and am speaking from personal experience .

I find wiggling my toes and moving my legs about helps

Thanks for your reply, I take Bisoprolol at night but never knew about cortisol surge. Thanks for your advice.

Now you mention it, I get something similar of an evening. It feels as if I am walking past an open fire. I am on Bisoprolol which I take in the morning. I wonder if there is a connection.

Well all three of us have mentioned bisoprolol

Well I refuse to take Bisoprolol now as it makes me really tired all day and my legs are aching constantly when I took them, only 2.5 mg! I have bad blood circulation in my legs, PAD, and Bisoprolol makes me worse! I took it in the evening! I used to take it on the morning, but felt like a Zombie all day! In 2019 I felt shattered because I took it in the morning! I couldn't wait to go home to bed after my shifts! Then I swapped to evenings, felt better during the day, but still affected my legs!

If you have had a heart attack like me, they prescribe Bisoprolol as well to stop your heart working too hard! Now I feel it's 2 years ago now and don't want this medication any more! It makes me feel lethargic and more tired! Sorry for going on here 🤔🤗👍

You are not going on I completely understand because bisoprolol made me feel awful as did the side effects of coming off. Am quite sure the repeated burning sensation in my lower legs is damaging my peripheral sensory nerves . The link to the article above is about whether beta blockers are useful after the first couple of years. I am not a doctor and am not giving advice but it may be worth discussing with your doctor if you are still taking them .

Thanks, nearly everyone who has replied, is on Bisoprolol so there may be a connection.

Thanks for your reply. Have recently had Bisoprolol increased for rate control of my AF which is OK but I get very tired, that is why I take a dose at night.

Got this too. IF you are taking a PPI ie omeprazole, lanzoprazole etc these drugs are notorious for causing this. These drugs, although excellent for reducing stomach acid, are also very good at reducing or eliminating the body's capapability to absorb MAGNESIUM.

Low magnesium symptoms include this leg or foot burning, tingling sensation AND ALSO Arrhythmias !!!

Mine got so bad tha if I closed my eyes, I could not feel someone touching my leg (chance would be a fine thing).

Since taking a good combined Magnesium/Calcium/Vit D3 supplement daily, these symptoms have subsided greatly for me and others too.

Boots the chemist do a good one.

Good luck, kindest regards and best of health to all.

Thank you for that information. I have been on lanzoprazole for years for a hiatus hernia. Never thought of that causing it. However I do take Adcal-D3 which contains calcium carbonate and vitamin D3. Perhaps a magnesium supplement may help.

I had that prescribed last year January, Calcium and vitamin D3 is a very small dose in there and recommended is 25 ug, per day! Just not enough really! 🤔

Hi, I am on Bisoprolol, furosemide, prasugrel, valsartan, omeprozol and metformin following heart attack and 4 stents. I never had any problems with my feet but went to having very icy cold feet to burning hot and sleepless nights. My wife has been on bisoprolol for a while for irregular heart beat and found it made her a bit giddy. Her cardiologist suggested taking her tablet at night and it helped.

I am also suffering from extreme giddiness and now take mine at night. The giddiness is slightly better but feet are much better. I also found plenty of toe wriggling or a short walk to the bathroom helps. I would check with your doctor first as mine was not keen to take bisoprolol at night. I have a review of my meds coming up soon and I need to do something about giddiness, so far I have been ignored and told it's more important to keep taking the meds.

Thanks for your reply. I am on such a high dose of Bisoprolol 10mg that I was advised to split into 2 doses since 10mg was too much for me in one go.

in reply to Pippa80

Wow that is high. Wife is on 5mg and I am on 3.75mg. I will will repost after med review if they change anything to improve my feeling s**t all the time.

Thanks for your reply. Trouble is I am on so many meds not sure which is causing symptoms of tiredness , breathlessness and burning legs. Gosh sounds awful, must go out into the garden since it is a beautiful day and forget all my worries.

I know they made me feel dreadful . Completely ruined my quality of life . Very glad you are feeling better ❤️

I shall discuss this with my doctor soon on Monday morning! It's really difficult to get them on the phone now, but I shall persevere! I do have higher blood pressure, but I am certain, she can prescribe something different instead or increase Ramipril! I am on 5 mg now! But I am not taking medication to make me feel bad, sorry! My decision, unless my condition was life threatening, otherwise, No!!

My youngest brother was 50 years old! He had a quadruple bypass after his heart attack, but he told me this year he is not taking Bisoprolol any more! Doctor said, you don't need it! You are doing well!

Think he took for 2 years! Must ask him next time I talk to him 🤗❤️👍

Website very interesting Peony 😁😄

Thanks will enquire about changing it or at least reducing the dose. However that may increase my heart rate.
