So here I was all gowned up and ready to be taken down to theatre at 8.00am this morning when I was told by the Surgeon there was a delay.

At 10.00am I was told the operation was cancelled for today and they would tell me more when they new more.

At 2.30pm I was told that their were no ICU beds available and the operation would be postponed until January.

Back to the departure gate and exit the plane!!!!

Oh I am so sorry you have had your op delayed until January, I was thinking of you this morning and wondering how you were.It must be so difficult to get to the point of being gowned and told it’s on hold then later told it’s off until next month.

Hope you try and relax over Christmas.

Best wishes

Pauline

Thanks Pauline, this morning ICU admitted an 18 year old man who had a cardiac arrest and quite rightly that took priority. So there were no beds available.

I certainly will not stress about this, it’s worry that got me into this situation in the first place.

I just love your attitude, you are strong and positive and that will see you through next month. I feel so sorry for this young mans parents, they must be terrified.

My husband went through 4 bypass cancellations with 5th time lucky. The last cancellation happened when he was being wheeled down to theatre! The only way to look at this disappointment is to think of the poor soul (and his/her family) who is much worse off than you.

It was annoying to have to drive a 100 mile round trip to and from the hospital to collect an agitated husband!!! However, he got there in the end and you will too. xxxx

4 cancellations, OMG I feel for you and your husband, and that journey can’t have helped.I’m glad it worked out well in the end.

5th time lucky.

Oh that's harsh to say the least, you're there all ready to go and it gets cancelled. I hope you're able to have a relaxing and stress free Christmas and then get ready to go in the New Year. Best Wishes

Thanks, “my allocated bed” in ICU was taken by an 18 year old man who had a cardiac arrest so quite rightly that took priority.

I’ll certainly look to have a stress free Christmas, thank you for your thoughts and best wishes.

You have my sympathy the same thing happened to myself only I had only 5 days to wait. The funny part was they had given me a tablet to relax me when I was gowned up. Was out of it for 4 hours before I realised was not going to theatre.

Keep safe and enjoy your Christmas

Hi Disney Take a bottle from Duty Free you deserve it.

I have been there ready to go first in theatre on the trolley pre med everything then crash landed. I even went home for the night to be back next morning, and done early afternoon. The Surgeon couldn't have been more apologetic I think this happens more than people know. I loved working under pressure but these guys have to balance so much. Just relax it will happen soon then onwards and upwards

best regards

They are really good points and I think you are right this happens more than you imagine. My Surgeon and staff, like yours, were apologetic but as I said to them, it’s not their fault.

They have an incredibly difficult job to do and they do it so well.

I had the same thing. Two dates cancelled the day I was supposed to go in for AVR. Third time I managed to get into hospital, all ready in the morning and was postponed to the afternoon because of an emergency, then in the afternoon was told it wasn’t going to be that day and that it would be the following week. Thankfully it went ahead the following week. As frustrating as it was, at least I wasn’t in an emergency situation like the people who bumped me out.

Hope you can relax and enjoy Christmas and your op goes ahead in January.

That must have been terrible, you build yourself up and then you have to bring yourself down - again, again and again. But you got there in the end as I know I will. And as you rightly say, sadly somebody else needed the bed more than you.

Sorry to hear you were cancelled so near to your operation. Same thing happened to me & yes it does happen a lot purely down to the nature of the surgery. All I can say is that second time around I was far less stressed, knew what was going to happen & didn’t believe it was going to happen until they got me on that trolley in the Anaesthetic room & put me to sleep!Take care, stay safe & your time will come again v soon.....

Thank you, yes reading the posts on this forum I think it does happen more than you would think.I’m determined not to get stressed and believe that second time it will happen.

I had the same problem, all ready to go at 6:30am and was left until 1:15pm until someone told me it was cancelled due to an emergency, was not very happy as this was the third cancellation. More upset about the lack of communication but had the op 10 days later.

Disney59 profile image
Disney59 in reply to cabbagepatch66

It’s stressful isn’t it but reading between the lines I think a lot of behind the scenes negotiating about beds goes on.And of course that have to be sure they have a bed available in ICU before they start the operation.

But I’ll get there.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Colin.

It was the Essex Cardiovascular Centre in Basildon. Thanks for the advice about relaxing, I’ll certainly look to do that as it was worry and stress that created this problem for me.

Good analogy about it being a bumpy flight - as long as it’s a smooth landing. Thank you for your thoughts and best wishes.

Oh no how disappointing. But keep smiling 😂 it will happen. Good luck.

Oh that's just cruel. I know they can't help ICU beds being full but surely they must have had an idea that may be possible but I see it was an emergency. Wow , was there really only that one bed available?

Disney59 profile image
Disney59 in reply to Qualipop

What happened was that 2 ICU beds were unexpectedly taken over night and the remaining bed was needed for an 18 year old man who had a cardiac arrest that morning. So in the space of less than 8 hours, 3 beds were required for emergencies.Cant blame the hospital for events that are outside of their control.

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply to Disney59

No, I'm afraid things happen out of their control and if you'd been one of those people you'd have been desperate for he bed. Shame though.

It's so annoying isn't it. Had similar for an unrelated to heart problem. There early in the morning, meds stopped days before, no breakfast, all gowned up etc. Then surgeon says sorry can't do full procedure as no beds but as you are here we can do the half that can be done as a day case and we can reschedule the rest. Ok I'm here now so go ahead, but it was 6 months later before the other half was done. I hope it's not that long for you.☺

Disney59 profile image
Disney59 in reply to gladliz

Goodness me that must have been very confusing and distressing for you. And a 6 month wait can’t have helped, but I’m glad that you got there in the end.

dunestar profile image
dunestar

How awful. The hospital owes you one, but I guess it doesn't work like that if there's an emergency.

Disney59 profile image
Disney59 in reply to dunestar

Yes it was, but the bed was needed for an 18 year old man who had a cardiac arrest so quite rightly that took priority. On the positive, although I certainly need the procedure the Surgeon obviously thought I could wait a few weeks.

I feel for you. I've had my op cancelled twice, each time before I left home fortunately. I now have a new date in 12 days time. Fingers crossed that your next date goes ahead and mine. I hope being able to have a more active Xmas is some small consolation.

Omg.....I’m so sorry! What a let down for you ! Are you feeling devastated or relieved?

Disney59 profile image
Disney59 in reply to Gladwyn

That’s a brilliant question. I think disappointed. It has to be done. But I really feel for my wife and family who had mentally built themselves up for the operation to take place.

I think in many ways it’s worse for your loved ones than for the patient.

Gladwyn profile image
Gladwyn in reply to Disney59

Ofcourse , I hadn’t thought of your wife and close family and the effect on them! It must have been such a blow to them. I was just thinking of you and your initial reaction to the postponement. I’m glad you felt disappointment rather than relief! To me it shows you made the right choice in going for the op.

I wish you the very best and hope you sail through it all. 🍀🙏🦋
