Hi I am in my 5th week post HA/Stent in LAD. I am on Apixaban, Clopidogrel, Ramipril, Bisoprolol and Atorvastin. In the main I have got on with them reasonably well but last night had a bad stomach upset with attendant trips to the toilet! I spoke to my GP this morning to see what remedies I could take for this that wouldn't clash with the heart meds and he wants to put me on Lanzaprosole going forward and thought this should have been prescribed by the hospital on discharge. Given that I haven't had any previous stomach issues and put last nights episode down to what I had eaten and not to the heart meds - this seems a bit excessive. Before the HA I was on no meds and am now on five I am loathe to take anymore unless I have to.
Would be grateful for any advice you can give particularly those who are taking Lansopazole and whether this was part of the standard package of meds when you left hospital.

I was on Lansoprazole post op but as soon as the antibiotics ended they stopped it. It was only to stop the meds making you ill (but if I am honest, it gave me wind).
If you are on Aspirin you need to be on Lansoprazole or similar, to protect your stomach, not sure what other drugs, if any, this applies to!
I had to stop Lansoprazole as it caused horrendous diarrhoea, as it has for others that have replied on here, I was switched to Omeprazole with no problems since.
Remember we all react differently to our meds, so you may be fine.
Thanks for both replies. I was on aspirin for the first month part of so-called "Triple Therapy" but now carry on for the next 11 months on Clopidogrel and Apixaban as "Double Therapy".
Gaz-Chops your experience with Lansoprazole is what I'm afraid of and I don't want stomach issues on top of having to deal with the recovery. GP's view seems to be that it will protect stomach from the possible adverse effects of Clopidogrel/Apixaban - although none so far.
I am due to speak to my cardiologist soon and see what he thinks.
When they stopped Lansoprazole because of diarrhoea, they didn’t replace it with anything and a couple of months later I was blue lighted with suspected HA, turned out it was indigestion because I wasn’t given something to protect my stomach, that’s when they tried Omeprazole and no probs since.
I was on Omeprazole when I was on Asprin, Lisinopril, Bisoprolol and Atorvastatin. This was changed to Lansoprazole when Clopidogrel was added to the mix as this is the preferred PPI (proton pump inhibitor) with Clopidogrel. The idea is to protect your stomach as an ulcer could be serious with either Clopidogrel or Apixaban.
Clopidogrel can irritate your stomach lining and apixiban can encourage bleeding, your GP is 💯 doing the right thing it's not over kill. It's the right thing to do X x
I have been on Lansoprazole since my bypass 4 years ago and have not had any issues. As Gaz_chops said, my understanding is also that you should take it if you are on Aspirin to protect your stomach.
I've been on Lanzoprazole for 14 months, alongside Ramipril ,bisoprilol, avorstatin, ticagrilor,furosemide,aspirin and epleronone. I had a stent after a serious MI. Had no problems with taking it apart from you can't eat grapefruit if you take it .
I’ve been on Lansoprazole since my HA in February. Also on Edoxaban, Atorvastatin, Clopidogrel, Bisoprolol and Candesartan. No major issues save for some diarrhoea but that seems to have stopped now.
I was discharged with Aspirin, Losartan, Clopidogrel, Diltiazem, Atorvastatin and Bisoprolol. No PPI as I am allergic to them. No anti-biotics. The Diltiazem was a 6 week course to prevent spasm on the blood vessels and the Clopidogrel a 12 month course to help prevent stroke. I could not cope with the statin so that got dropped. Throughout and since I have not had any issue with my stomach.
I've been taking it daily for over 2 years now. Can't really say how affective it is because I ended with holes in my stomach lining anyway.
It's standard issue, though, and is meant to stop your stomach producing excessive acid. If you have gut issues even after taking it I'd recommend something like slippery elm in addition.
Slippery elm is a very good idea I've not thought of. The anti stomach problem pill I was given in hospital (maybe Lanzoprozole) made me queasy so stopped it. Always make sure I eat food with pills and drink lots of water a day. (now I'm trying hard to get used to Nebivrolol and cant stomach more than half the dose partly because of tummy probs.) Why do you have holes if you took lanz. ? ......Seperate thing ....You call yourself the Voice so it must be important to you. Have any of the pills you've been forced to take affected your voice? Mine is useless on betablockers and maybe other heart pills too and I'm unsure what to try next to lower bp. (Had emergency aortic dissection 8 months ago )
Hi there, I've been on it since my bypass 3years ago. As I'm allergic to aspirin I'm taking clopidogrel.It seems to be standard procedure whilst taking heart medications.
And like you I was also not taking any medication before blue lighted into hospital and it's taken me a looong time to accept the fact they're helping me.
Hi there, yes my symptoms were constant nose bleeds and the tiniest pin prick sized 'pimples' around my nostrels, mouth, finger tips and around the cuticles. Hope this is of some help you.
Mine are skin rashes scalp and shoulder (so far) but I have had this reaction to some antibiotics too (which I am not taking at the moment). Wonder if I can take higher dose of clopi instead though I know both meds act differently. May post this as a main post at some point.
I've been taking Lanzoprazole for over 17 years due to also taking clopidogrel and , of and on, asprin, plus a hiatus hernia. Prior to being put on it I was severely anaemic due to bleeding from the stomach wall from the meds. I have had no problems since then. We're all differnt in our drug responses, but if you don't get on with Lanzoprazole there are similar alternatives.
Hi I’m post 4week and on Lansoprazole short term 8 week plus Aspirin ongoing and other meds had no issues so far apart from high blood pressure which we are slowly getting down with B P pills
I used to take Amopraxole for my Hyeitus Hernia, recently I was started on Lansoprozole. when I asked why the change, I was told this medicine was more compatible with Clopedogrel, which I have just started taking after minor Stroke, I have no problems taking this.
Hi Lagun68, I am just about to begin taking this medication, due to pick up a 'scrip. I have been advised that, because I have taken blood thinners including aspirin daily for the past nine years,my stomach lining might need some help. I take several meds including candasartan, bisorporol, thyroxine, statins, warfarin bumetide and spirondactol. I am also to be prescribed a drug to reduce my attacks of gout, which are a side affect of taking bumetide. Like you, I am loath to add to this list - what with paracetamol and pregabalin And vitamin D. I am willing to give it a go - the pain of gout is horrendous, and I do have niggly bits of indigestion. Both the new medications come with their own possible side effects so I will not stay on them if it is too distressing. The plus side of all these drugs is that the docs are pleased with the stability of leaking valves, heart failure and AF!! Like you, I watch with interest....
hi beware the lansoprozol ... 340 trips to the loo in 8 weeks of hurrendous runs. had a ct scan fit test and a tummy exam all clear, lost 1 and a half stone came off lanzoprosol and all back to normal now would NEVER take these again, iwas on clopidog bisoprolol and atoravastatin as well good luck id been on lanzoprosol for 6 weeks before it started thats when they work properly apparently
The issue with PPIs is that they strip out a lot of your gut biome - hence the diarrhoea. They can cause C Difficile long term for the same reason. Also osteoporosis. I would suggest taking a probiotic to try and repopulate your gut biomes with ‘good’ bacteria.
Hi there, following my HA in 2012 I was prescribed Lansoprazole 15mg alongside the usual 5 heart meds. I still take it daily as I’m on low dose Aspirin. I had stomach/gut issues prior to the HA, the Lansoprazole has helped with those too. There are other PPI meds that may suit you better. I suggest that you discuss with your primary care physician. I was on lansoprazole which caused me no end of issues. I did not have the best of reactions. It caused trapped balls of wind high up in my chest and throat which I mistook for angina as it mimicked the onset of my heart attack. Most likely a result of high acid levels. I ended up twice in hospital with nothing detectable. It also sent me to the toilet a few times a day with diarrhoea. However, lots of people have better reactions to lansoprazole and I needed a ppi to protect against aspirin. Omeprazole was prescribed as a substitute and has worked better for me personally, so far. Still need the toilet but only once extra a day and all chest issues have gone. We all react differently to these meds, but a ppi or something else will prevent the chance of an aspirin-related ulcer or other damage and certainly brought down the acid levels for me.
