Swimming for Cardiac Health

As I live in a Condominium with a lovely pool my cardiologist has encouraged me to use it without fear. I have not been in it for 2 years even though it is just below my balcony. If it was in England it would be full with towels reserving the sunbeds. My irrational fear of having a heart attack whilst swimming πŸ™„

I'm not sure? πŸ€” It looks a long way down! 😁

Seriously though I would think you would be fine. However, it would be sensible to use it when others are about...

Swimming is a great exercise, something cardio rehab push as good for us along with dancing! Michael is spot on don’t swim when there is no one around.

Tks Pauline - you are both right. Maybe I can do the Jitterbug or Charleston in the pool.

Now that’s made me smile,πŸ˜‚ how are you?

I’d be in that every single day. It looks lovely πŸ™‚

Tks all. I will don the speedo's next week. It is almost always empty except for children's swimming classes at weekend. I may dedicate one evening per week and gain confidence.

That sounds like a great idea.

Definately use it but make sure water is not too cold. Water below 21c should be treated with caution. Ideally use when above 23c, try walking up and down pool. As with any exercise warm up first, arm stretches in water a short swim start gradually, when you finish swim dont just stand still or sit do some wind down movements. Looks lovely whereabouts are you? Enjoy

I have lived in Singapore for 20 years. This is my home and we share the pool with 20 apartments. Been in this home 10 years and look down on it every day. Only been in it about 5 times in the last 2 years which is a pity. Prob is the temperature here is over 30 every day which makes the water seem very cold. Thanks for your post.

Well looking at the number of replies you have a new fan base, you won't be shirt of swim buds, 48 Singapore slings by the pool.

See what you mean about the difference in air and water temp so dangle your legs in water splash it on body before launching into swim. A sports watch monitoring heart rate may give you confidence I wear my Polar watch when I swim.

Very jealous! Lucky you. Go for it. But with others around obv

Oooooh, I have SUCH pool envy! But I also completely empathise with your concern about possibly having a heart event occur while you're in there. I used to love to be the only person in the pool with no-one around, I had such confidence in my common sense and swimming ability I just knew I was safe to swim at 0500hrs all on my lonesome.

Until I had pericarditis and collapsed during my evening walk onto a neighbour's driveway. I've never swum alone since as my fear is an acute flare would cause strong angina and the resulting gasp at the pain might happen while I was face down in the water. Now I'm very careful to have a spotter swim buddy - someone who really does keep an eye on me to make sure I've not got into trouble.

Find a spotter swim buddy. I used to keep mine in Swiss chocolates but you'll find something less 'sinful' to repay the favour of someone dedicating themselves to making sure you make it out of the pool on your own strength:)

Smileyian in reply to Sunnie2day

Haha.....you always seem so lighthearted even though you have much to be concerned about. I like the name Swim Buddy.

Smileyian profile image
Smileyian in reply to Sunnie2day

I checked with my wife and it is okay if you hop over and be my swim buddy for a month. Fantastic National Heart Centre here with all the latest equipment. Please bring 50 walnut whips in a cool bag.

Can I come? ( if we both could fly long-haul) I was in Singapore in β€˜92 Did a trip with John to the Far East, on his ship. Fabulous place we weren’t there long enough just 2 days to look round, before it was time to sail again.

080311 in reply to Fluffybee

Let’s make a party of itπŸ˜‚ you have walnut whips that’s got to make it go with a swingπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ there’s bound to be quite a few who would like a break. We could charter a plane. In this virtual world Sunnie and I wouldn’t have a problem with water retention 😩

Fluffybee profile image
Fluffybee in reply to 080311

Let’s do it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ it’s going to be wonderful, I’ll get on to my pilot to see if he can sort us out a flight, do you know how many are coming πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

080311 profile image
080311 in reply to Fluffybee

We could put a message out do a head countπŸ˜‰ isn’t it nice to be a bit silly. When we have heart issues we can become so serious and only think about our health but sometimes it’s just great to forget those things and just be silly. Thanks Fluffybee for being you.

Sunnie2day in reply to 080311

Count me in! Between the three of us we can take enough Walnut Whip to keep Ian going for, oh, at least a month:) And loads more if we get enough of the other Hearties organised!

Fluffybee profile image
Fluffybee in reply to Sunnie2day

Brilliant, we’ll need lots of cool bags and hope we can get the walnut whips all packed up, must allow a few extra so we can have some with Ian πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day in reply to Fluffybee

I wonder if we could rig a hard-side suitcase (large of course) to carry Ian's (so we can nibble our way from Britain to Singapore with the carry-ons!).

Fluffybee profile image
Fluffybee in reply to Sunnie2day

Of course we can, we’re part of the hearties a strong bunch, we’ll get that organised using cad as I speak πŸ˜‚

So I’ll design it so we have one either side of the plane to even things up a bit is that ok with everyone ?

080311 in reply to Sunnie2day

Lovely, I quite like curly whirlies do you think there would be room for a couple of those?πŸ˜‚

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day in reply to 080311

They should be easy to pack, what a great idea! And you do know now I'm going to have to work out how to hack those - mmm, let's see, first find a silicone mould I could pour melted caramel into and braid later...melt the caramels, pour, let cool then after shaping, melt and pour the chocolate...DOABLE!

I really am a chocoholic, oh dear!

Sounds good to me, love being a bit silly, there’s so much unhappiness, worry and stress it’s awful a magic wand cannot be waved and make everyone better πŸ€—

Let me know how many gets rounded up and I’ll get onto on flight refreshments, all first class of course. We need to sort out dates to leave etc I’ve already packed my cozy πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

You are all just so funny. Good for you. I will book Wally Nut a landing spot at Changi Airport and alert customs re the importation of a plane full of Walnut Whips for Cardiac Health rehab reasons at my poolside. I am sure they will provided a "freezer truck" given they must do this all the time. Entrance fee for 2 weeks at mine is numerous Walnut whips each, dress code Guys - Red Speedos and Gals Itsy witsy yellow dot bikinis. I better revert to health issues on here otherwise I will be banned by the administrator πŸ€” maybe she likes Walnut Whips🀣

It’s been hysterical, I’ll never look at a walnut whip the same without this story behind it, I was trying to think where it started from ?????? Think it started when I had a walnut whip ready for when I got home, and look what it’s turned into πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I started swimming again in the sea after a HA on Boxing Day and it was really invigorating and made me feel better and it’s a great form of exercise, as always know your limitations so nice and slow and not for long then build on that good luck. Sadly for me the temperature is a bit cool in the sea now 16 degrees!

Hi smileyian, how do I PM you?? We have a second home in Malaysia -Kuala Lumpur. I will bring you some walnut whip when I next come over. Foreigners not allowed in at the moment :( 'cos of Covid19.

Smileyian profile image
Smileyian in reply to Nks900

Haha. I had better not eat Walnut Whips but I thank you for your kind thought. I was at a friends place in Muar last year but seldom go to Malaysia now. Singapore much safer with very low Covid. Take care as I hear infections reaching new heights in UK. Just hope my 100 yo mother stays safe at Frinton - on - Sea.
