Attendance Allowance, have just received the forms for applying for this, amazed that most of the questions have little or no relevance to my Heart Attack/ Stoke and depression , are these forms supposed to help or confuse people that much they give up, applied for help through Age UK to complete the forms for me, as sp little is in relation to my condition I don’t hold out much success in getting an award.

Anyone else in the forum found form filling difficult in respect of your condition?

Excuse my ignorance but what is Attendance Allowance? And for what ?

Attendance Allowance is a payment from the government to assist either you or your carer with day to day needs following a disability, it does not have to be ( in my case Heart Attack/Stoke ) anyone with a living disability can apply for this , things covered include

Learning Disability

Stoke movement

Depression

To name some, however you need to be of pensionable age to claim it, under pension age you could apply for PIPs another form of payment.

Hope this is of some use.

Thanks for information. I would assume that this would be means tested.

No, as long as you correctly fill in the form correctly ( get help with this ) you are entitled to claim, of course it goes in front of the big I am, as long as you have supportive proof they cannot refuse, there are 2 forms of payment tax free and not calculated on earnings or savings, I think they range from near £60 a week to £100! , get a form on line and have a look, what have you got to loose.

I can't claim pension benefits yet, but good luck to you Carbait, I hope all pensioners like you get every penny they are entitled to.

Each year, HMRC and DWP publish figures showing how many people are missing out on each benefit and how much they are losing. The total amount unclaimed across all the benefit was £15.9billion last year.

3.4million disabled pensioners could be missing out on up to £4,558 a year in attendance allowance.

The benefit is paid to Brits who've reached state pension age and need help looking after due to a physical or mental disability.

Roughly 6.41million over-65s need help with activities like washing and dressing, meaning they're likely to qualify for attendance allowance, charity Turn2us said.

Yet only 1.6million Brits claimed the benefit last year.

All the best mate.

NO it's not but do get help and send details and details and details on the worst ever situation. Benefits and Work is a fantastic website for help. I sent 11 extra pages with my PIP claim. If you can't do something say why, say what happens in detail; say what you have tried that doesn't work - absolutely everything and keep records, copies, dates and times of phone calls.

Filled the form in back last July, Husband had a massive stroke and I became his carer, his stroke nurse suggested we apply. It’s like a book ! But worked my way through it. They do ask a lot of questions, (47) trying to work out how many hours I spend taking care of him is like wow that’s hard to say, but did it. Sent his repeat prescription script with the form and dates of hospital appointments and names of his consultants. He doesn’t need help through the night so there were quite a few questions didn’t need to answer. I was told by the stroke nurse now he as Attendance Allowance and if I was ill again getting help for him will be easier.

Hope you can get sorted.

Cheers Pauline, like you there are many questions I don’t think I will need to answer, let’s hope it works out.

Stay safe

Remember they will back date the payment just don’t delay to long before you send it back. They back dated Johns payment 6 weeks.

As with any sickness/ disability forms make sure you fill it in as if it’s your worst day. No good saying you can walk X amount if you can only do it one day a week.

You will find it repetitive, it’s not linked totally to your condition but what you can do day to day.

Remember to take a copy!

Very good advice judes.

I did exactly that on my PIP application. I took a copy so when I had my review last year it was much easier to complete.

Good luck!

Thanks Jude’s,

It will be a further 2 weeks before I can get help from Age UK to complete the form, never thought about taking a copy, good thinking, a decent human being at the DWP advised getting the help.

Maisie did they give a reason why , and have you challenged their decision?

No I gave up. I’m not disabled but I do need help which my husband provides no reason was given.

Maisie, why don’t you claim for your husband as your carer?, it works both ways.
