Can I reduce my Bisoprolol further?

I'm taking Bisoprolol since a heart attack 3 years ago. (the only identifyable cause I was told was that I was over 50 and male; all else was perfect). For the past 3 months I have embarked on daily exercise of a very energetic nature, (before that it was mainly daily walks, now its strenuous gym and cycling), which is now resulting in bouts of light-headedness associated with mild nausea. A visit to the GP last week because of this, showed, after doing a ECG, my heart rate to be 46 (blood pressure was normal). He reduced my Bisoprolol from initial prescribed 5mg to 2.5mg. I am still experiencing this lightheadedness slightly, and have a heart rate of 55. I want to know if I can reduce this further. I am on Aspirin, Atorvastatin and Ramipril as well.

I’m guessing most people will say, as I am, you need to discuss this with your GP or cardiologist.

Fwiw on my part I’d question your exercise “of a very energetic nature.” I had an appointment with my Heart Failure nurse yesterday and she’s always concerned about over-exercising and especially light headedness.

My advice would be it is too soon to think about dropping any further at this stage. You could get withdrawal or rebound effects.

I would suggest you keep monitoring your blood pressure and pulse regularly and keep a record of the readings. Your improving fitness should generally help with your blood pressure. It may be that you can reduce further or eventually even stop the bisoprolol. In my own case, as my fitness increased, my resting pulse rate was getting lower and lower, resulting in dizzy spells and nausea. It does take time for the Bisoprolol to leave your system if you reduce, or stop it all together. Once you have monitored yourself for a while, if you are still experiencing the dizziness I would contact your GP for their advice. In my own case I was only on the minimum dose of 1.25 mg and my GP was more than happy for me to stop taking the drug.

I had a heart attack last Boxing Day and started with 2.5mg of Bisoprolol with low BP ( 88/54) and HR of 50 so my GP reduced the Bisoprolol to 1.25 mg and no real side effects he also reduced Ramipril to 2.5 once a day + Atorvastin and Presugural I’m waiting for an ECG stress test.

I am on bisoprolol 2.5mg twice daily. I feel that my BP and pulse rate is too low as I often go dizzy when standing up. However my consultant is adamant that I don't reduce the bisoprolol as in his words, " we like low BP "
