Views please on my travel insurance quote.

Hello everyone. I don’t post often but I hope you can help me.

I need to continue my travel insurance cover into next year to be covered for what I think will be the inevitable cancellation of a trip I have planned for India in January 2021. This was already rebooked from Jan 2020 following my HA in December 2019.

Compare the Market has quoted me £1760 for couples yearly multi trip including the USA. As my hubs is 70 with an enlarged prostate, raised cholesterol & IBS and my medical history at 64 includes having had breast cancer, depression and a low thyroid I thought this was a pretty good price. However, my husband thinks it’s outrageous and is talking about cutting our losses and not travelling abroad anyway next year. During the course of the inevitable argument, he suggested I ask for other’s thoughts about whether this is a good price, so I’m asking you guys. What do you think? Am I seduced by the quote just because I want to get away or is this reasonable, given our circumstances?

I've got a annual multi trip policy, which excludes US for £270. It's with StaySure.

I'm not sure if Compare the Market would be a good option for finding travel insurance if you have medical conditions - they're good for car or house insurance but travel insurance for people with medical issues is a bit specialist. One option to reduce the cost is to exclude travel to the US or the Caribbean if you don't plan to travel there as medical costs there are through the roof.

I'd suggest you try StaySure or AllClear, both of which specialise on travel insurance for people with medical issues.

With a specialist insurer I got single trip cover for myself, my daughter, and my minor sister to spend two weeks in the US for £200. My daughter has life-limiting complex needs and spends 8+ weeks a year in hospital, I have an arrhythmia, a history of brain surgery, and a couple of other things. The nearest company that would even quote us for the same trip via a comparison site wanted in excess of £600. Shop around with medical specialist insurers.

I always had annual worldwide multi trip, but after my heart attack and the placement of stents I was quoted a ridiculous amount from my company at renewal so I went on a comparison website, listed all my treatment and everything I had wrong with me!!! Left off cover for the USA and got an amazing policy. I know there are companies that deal solely with people with medical needs but I have better cover than my previous specialist insurance company at a third of the price.

I have used both Insure and Go, and Avanti since my HA. Both dearer than pre HA but nothing like your quote.

The quote does seem very high. My wife and I were due a tour of New Zealand in early 2020 but had to cancel due to my surgery. The travel company were excellent and allowed us to postpone the trip until early 2021. However once the whole coronavirus situation flared up, we decided to cut our losses, lose the deposit and cancel the trip. There is always another day.

I used good to go insurance, as hardly anyone would cover me as I was on the transplant list, it was £224 for a week in Spain, and I never needed it as the holiday was cancelled, lost £80 but I still would not be without good insurance, I found saga policies good but they wouldn't cover me for cancellation, got my transplant, hoping to be a lot cheaper if I can get away next year

I would try Insurance With, my wife and I have several chronic conditions between us including AF,HYPCHOLESTEROLAEMIA, BARRETT'S OESOPHAGUS, HIATUS HERNIA, OSTEOPOROSIS, OCCULAR HYPERTENSION, POST HERPETIC NEURALGIA, QUADRUPLE BYPASS. in 2018, when we were both 81 they quoted about £300 for 2 weeks in Tenerife but with £500 pound excess should any claim be due to a pre existing condition.

I use InsuranceWith which was recommended on this site but they wouldn’t give me one policy for a whole year. I had to take 3 policies for 3 trips. They were all cancelled due to CoVid anyway but they allowed me to transfer the policy for one trip with a small Additional payment being required.

Reading the replies here, I am going to try to get a policy to cover me for a whole year, excluding travel to the US because I don’t want to go there anyway!

Thanks everyone for such helpful advice. I’m going to plan some time in the next few days to go to the sites you mentioned and get quotes, both including and excluding the USA. I know it’s likely to be a long job but knowing there are places which will insure me cheaper than £1760, will provide the impetus I need. You’ve all given me some great options to try (& saved me a bomb) so thanks again.
