Hi is anyone else taking Warfarin medication to help there blood?

I used to be on it from birth up until I was 11 then got moved on to aspirin because I was a naughty child and never wanted my Anticoagulant Therapy appointment to be checked but 9 months ago I had a Heart Attack and I got moved back on to warfarin and I'm getting mixed responses of the doctors basically when your on warfarin your not aloud to eat or drink vitamin K some doctors are telling me not to and my anticoagulant team are telling me to ignore it what do I do? I'm confused

I am been taking warfarin for many years you must not have anything with Cranberry in it or grapefruit. regarding food I was told and it’s worked for me if you eat foods that have high vitamin K like dark green vegetables spinach etc you can carry on eating them but don’t increase it .

Alcohol can also affect it so keep your alcohol level moderate also there are a lot of other medications including herbal products that can affect it so you need to check before taking. I pretty much eat everything other than cranberry and grapefruit.

This has worked for me but I am not a doctor it is only what I follow

Do check again with the person who does your INR levels

I’ve been on warfarin for more years than I care to remember, shwills has covered most of it well.

The only thing I would add is be consistent with your VitK intake, for example I always have broccoli three time’s a week.

Not a good idea to drink too much alcohol but I do have odd beer or G +T

Also double check any over the counter drugs and herbal remedies.

There are lots of things that are inadvisable to take with warfarin we are all different so check with your medical team

One other thing there is no need to let warfarin rule your life, work with it, be sensible, have your INR tested when your supposed to and try not to get anxious.

I’ve been on warfarin 20+ years had a few probs but soon resolved.

Since being on warfarin I haven't had major problems only little ones but I eat a lot of greens so maybe it was the cause so I'm going to cut back on them and maybe try your way by having them 3 times a week instead of every night with my meals.

If you usually have greens every night I wouldn't change. The warfarin dose will have taken that into account. Some people think having foods high in vit K regularly actually help in keeping your blood tests steady

If you usually have greens, then don’t change. Your INR tests and warfarin doses should be able to accommodate this.

It’s just my way of doing things and we are all different if your used to having greens every night then carry on and things will settle.

Consistency is the key with Vit K and warfarin.

Sometimes your INR can change for no reason whatsoever which is quite frustrating.

Always feel free to pm me

Regarding eating greens etc you are supposed to not go too mad and eat loads so that your Inr isn’t erratic loads of things have vit k in them some less than others but if you look up on line it will tell you the worse ones . I have now been put on Lixiana but it may not be right for you , and there is not supposed to be a problem with what you eat only time will tell , and if correct not so many Inr checks
