Best BP meds

Hi, I have had high BP for about 4 years now with no obv cause. I'm slim, don't really consume alcohol, and I'm healthy. Can someone tell me what the best meds are for high BP? I was always on labetalol due to pregnancies so now need to change. Ramipril gives me a slight cough I've read some can damage your kidneys which worries me! Thanks

I use to be the same, elevated BP, not to high but Doctor wanted me to take meds. Someone I know suggested magnesium supplements and that, along with a daily walk outside, has brought mine down to normal range, no other lifestyle changes.

Thays good to know that magnesium helped you, I have read this also. I've just turned 40 so quite young my co suktant said! I may look into magnesium then.

I prefer Bis-Glycinate , 200mg , Pure Elemental Magnesium

I have read that beta blockers can work quite well with slim/average women. Often their HR is on the high side of average so the reduction brought about has negligible side effects.

Seriously, this is a question for your doctor! Slim people can have high BP from many causes, including high cholesterol. Dietary changes and exercise can help in some cases but not in others. The official documentation for medications lists the more common and rare side effects. For Ramipril a cough is listed in the more common side effects and kidney disfunction is listed in the more serious rarer side effects. Pretty much any heart med has common and serious side effects and a good doctor advises on these and will monitor for any side effects when you start a med. As for supplements, many can adversely interact with other meds and foods and should be medically prescribed.

I am never sure beyond supplements like Vitamin C, cod liver oil and similar why so many put their faith in supplements. Some years ago I met someone who was pre-diabetic (obese with raised BP and cholesterol) who didn't want any drugs from their GP yet self prescribed 17 different vitamins and supplements from Holland and Barrett. In reality I suspect what was really needed was BP medication and a stain both of which could potentially be reduced if they lost a lot of weight (~8 stone).

Yesterday I saw some fake news about supplements and Coronavirus. I think anyone who followed it could become quite ill and maybe worse if they had an underlying health issue!

Too true. My doctor has me on slow release iron, slow release vitamin C and a broad spectrum multi-vitamin and a probiotic because I'm vegetarian and can't eat a lot of grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits because of diverticulitis and FODMAP/IBS and regular blood tests have shown deficiencies. Doing it yourself though is unsafe and a waste of money.

Wow, you are friendly!! I'm working closely with my GP and with a top Consultant (my BP is genetic). my GP is obviously giving my different BP meds to try but they all have had side affects I can't deal with, hence why I thought I woukd ask the opinion of some people on here!! Also I put being slim. As didn't want people to say try and lose weight. If no help then just scroll along. Have a great day.

I seem to be going through them all at the moment bisoprolol gave me breathing issues carvedilol bought my blood pressure down too low now trying nicorandil.i am getting really down with it.

Hello Princessapp. I was on Ramapril for about 20 yrs. And have CKD. Then they changed my tablets. Cause they said they was having no help to my condition anymore. Changed me to Doxazosin and said they were kinder to kidneys. Which made me ask why i was not on them for 20yrs. The doc said it was a new tablet. But dont think it was. I am ok on Doxazosin anyway. Hi Brian, yes I read a lot about BP meds affecting kidneys and I don't want to be taking any meds to treat one illness to then give you another one (CKD). I hope your new tablets are kinder to your kidneys. Take care xx

I have been told they are. But sadly all tablets have a side effect. Doxazosin is also a b.p tablet too. My kidney condition. Was due to my 1 kidney never fully growing to full size when born. But was only found when i was 42. Take Care xx Brian
