Hi all

Does anyone know if bisoprolol 1.5mg increases the risk of a gastric bleed?

Many thanks

In all the material I have read, gastric bleeding is not something I have come across as being related to bisoprolol. More typically gastric bleeds would be a concern for long term nsaid intake (aspirin, ibuprofen etc).

Just wanted to support what stevejb1810 has said. And also to add that Anti platelets/thinners like Ticagrelor, Clopidogrel, Warfarin (although the latter works differently) can also cause bleeds. Sometimes you’ll be prescribed a proton pump inhibitor (like Lansoprazole) to lessen acid production to minimise gastric bleeds.

Agree with the Steves. If you look at the PIL (Patient Information Leaflet) gastric bleeding is not an issue with Bisosoporal. Looking at your other posts you are on a range of medication including Aspirin and Lansoprazole. The Aspirin has a very, very slight chance of causing a gastric bleed but you have been prescribed Lansoprazole to protect your stomach. However you must take Aspirin after food and never on an empty stomach!

And Lansoprazole 20/30 mins before you eat.

Thanks for all the replies. To be honest the reason for my question about bisoprolol is because my GP has put me on daily lansoprazol to protect my stomach because I am taking aspirin daily and was going to take citalopram which can also affect your stomach. I've decided I'm not going to take the citalopram so I was considering stopping the lansoprazol as the risk of gastric bleeds is reduced but i wasn't sure if bisoprolol also posed the same risk because if so I'd maybe have to stay on lansoprazol in spite of not taking citalopram. I appreciate there is a risk of bleeds associated with taking aspirin daily but I've been taking it for 2 years without taking lansoprazol with no problems. Also I'm only taking a low dose aspirin and to be honest I don't want to be taking lansoprazol long term which I'd have to if im taking it because of taking aspirin because I'll be taking aspirin for the rest of my life due to a blood condition I have.

Thanks again for your replies

My doc said that adults should usually be able to tolerate a baby aspirin alone without a PPI. I’d suggest you discuss it with him/her and see what s/he says. I take daily aspirin without a PPI and if I feel like I have indigestion (rarely and usually because I’ve over eaten) I have a Gaviscon. But do chat to your doc before stopping any meds.

Hi

My GI bleed was caused by aspirin and tricagrelor. After three and a half months was taken off aspirin completely and changed to clopidogrel. So far so good

I agree with the others, my husbands gastric bleed was caused by aspirin not Bisoprolol.
