Runny nose with bisoprolol fumarate

I am on bisoprolol fumarate 2.5mg for 3 years now and I have runny nose all the time especially while I am eating. This is so annoying and embarrassing. Any suggestions about this problem please answer me thank you.

Snap! I have been on 5mg Bisoprolol daily for about 14 months following a spell in hospital with chest pain caused by a leaking heart valve with regurgitation into the lungs. I started experiencing the really runny nose just a few months ago. When I mentioned it to the cardiologist at a check-up on Monday, I asked if I could reduce to 2.5mg to see if there was an improvement. Now that I've seen your post about your 2.5mg dose, that seems unlikely! The cardiologist said that it is a known side effect but unusual for it to happen to me after as long as this. Lots of good luck wishes to you and I'm sorry I can't give you any tips but I look forward to seeing any helpful replies you might get.

Snap. 2 and a bit years down the track and still get the runny nose. A friend has exactly the same issue. As yet, no fix. I've just learn't to live it. I'd be really interested in a fix if anyone has one.

I know this doesn't help a whole lot but at least you now know you are not alone!

I too have a runny nose 2 years after my bypass.Also my hands and feet are constantly cold.When it's too bad I jump on my exercise bike for a half hour.Works wonders for my hands and feet but not my nose.x

Yep same here, nose seems to be always running,( Always have tissues stuffed in every pocket), and feel cold all the time,

4+ years on still have a runny nose when eating, also suffer from cold hands. It's just something that I have learned to live with as whilst annoying isn't the end of the world. 🤧

I had my aortic valve replaced 4 years ago,

Same as you ,,, runny nose ,especially when eating, and I also have a permanent wheezing in my chest,

Not sure if that's a side effect of the Ramipril,

Suppose it's a small price to pay ,considering.

I've been back ,working as a landscape gardener for the last 3 years , so I'm not complaining!

Hi iv had the same problem for the last 16 months.. doctor suggested I stopped the Bisoprolol to see if it makes a difference.. within in two days I noticed a massive difference, I’m not even as cold as I used to be .. iv been told to not to take them for two months. I’m to go back to the doctors as they will put me back on the Bisoprolol for a few days and if I have the runny nose etc then they know that’s the one causing me all the problems .. x

Absolutely - I'm only on 1.25 mg and I have to leave the table 2-3 times every meal.

That is so very interesting - I’m on 1.25mg and have noticed that one side of my nose is often drippy! A right nuisance!

Snap! It is only one nostril that runs (and am tired but operational). I take 3.75 mg.

Aaaand here's another 1.25mg'er to say 'Yeppers, me too!'. I consider it a worthwhile trade-off, all things considered.

I have 3ply facial tissues (12xbox of 90 per) on my Subscribe and Save (Amazon), I have five pocket packs of facial tissues in my day bag AND my handbag, and what has been another great help is to blow my nose before starting to eat - I've noticed doing that means I can actually make it through a meal without having to leave the table, returning to cooled food I then try to rewarm in the microwave (rarely works, that rewarming).

Blowing my nose in the Ladies when out helps - I ask the server how long to delivery then wait a bit after ordering to decide when go to the Ladies. It's not the perfect system but it does seem to work to keep the food edible and my nose clear during the meal. If we linger I do end up having to excuse myself at least once before the afters.

ETA: and I've become shameless about stopping when needed whilst walking along the pavements - my nose seems to be especially runny if it's on the chilly side. (I do turn away from passersby ) I keep a dog waste bag in my pocket for the used tissues.

Funny how topics relate to things happening to one self. Among other medication I have been taking 5mg of Bisoprolol twice a day for the last 7+ years but have only recently noticed the runny nose and feeling cold. Mine only seems to happen in the morning, the nose that is, I feel cold a lot of the time but put that down to warfarin thinning my blood.

Goodness that seems like a big dose. I get very tired ( with a runny nostril) on 3.75. Do you suffer from tiredness? X

Well at least I am not alone! This is reassuring in one sense, so many of you dripping on about the problem! I am down to 1.25 mg dose and it has not reduced the flow at mealtime by very much, I just have learned to deal with it in a more sociable way. Unfortunately although it is a recognised side effect the GP and other medics just seem to have a blase view of the matter. It seems we have to live with it, mind you it has occurred to me we must be generating quite a volume of fluid per day. How does that relate to things like congestion on the lungs and the dreaded fluid retention elsewhere? Just a thought it must have some knock on effect!

We should all buy shares in the tissue manufacturers!

I have been on Bisoprolol 1.25 for about a year. I didn’t seem to have any side effects for about 2 months and it worked wonders for my light headedness and fainting problems and then I started with runny nose and very cold feet. I have read that you might be able to change to a different beta blocker but as these appear to be my only problems I’m not yet confident to make the move to a different medication. It would be interesting to find someone who has changed and to see if these symptoms have reduced or disappeared.

Hi. Have you tried cutting wheat out of your diet for a few days? Might be a good allergy and wheat is in more thing than you think. Might not be the BBs.

I’ve been taking 10mg of Bisoprolol for the past 5 years and get a runny nose while walking. I also have a frequent (small) ear infection. I would see your doctor about your runny nose as it must be very annoying

I’ve had my diagnosis of SVT since 2014. I have suffered with non- allergic rhinitis ever since. I also have hair loss, insomnia, headaches...

Does anyone know of an alternative medication?
