High blood pressure further tests?

Hi Folks,

I was diagnosed with Hypertension the Gp said dangerously high, since been diagnosed I’m struggling. I was monitored for 24 hours. Given medicine taking Lecalpin” 20mg.

My question is what damage have I done to my body that I am unaware about. Can I ask my Gp to do further tests etc. I think I might have had this for 10 months,no symptoms at all etc. Age45 , healthy weight, good diet, very fit, walk every day, don’t drink or smoke. Any suggestions welcome.

Hello and welcome to the forum! What level did he call dangerously high? If it had been high less than a year it is unlikely that any permanent damage has been done. Further tests that might be useful are blood tests for kidney function (high BP can strain the kidneys), a stress ECG (my resting one was normal with four severely blocked arteries) and an echocardiogram (working against high BP can strain the heart).

Hi Michael thanks for your reply. I will follow up with Gp.

Dangerously high could also mean: ‘good job we caught it as something nasty could have happened’. Try not to worry too much. That’ll send your BP up too.

What bp reading did you get? I was diagnosed with a bp of 244/133 last March,so really high!My last reading was two years before at the gp where it was 130/80, so pretty near normal.Anyway I was given an echocardiogram which showed mild thickening of the left side of my heart due to the pressure.I also had a kidney scan which was normal.I'm on 5mg each of ramipril and amlodipine getting readings in the 120s over 80s or below.

What is your bp now you are on meds? It is scary I know, especially when it is out of the blue. There is a group for high blood pressure support on Healthunlocked.Come and join us.

I would take these questions to your GP as soon as. Remember none of us here are qualified to give medical opinions or reassure you, like a professional is. I hope things are fine.

Hi buy yourself a BP machine I have used one for years

So if you think your BP is high you can phone your surgery

It should read 130/80 hope this helps

Every time I went to the doctors I was told my blood pressure was high but they didn’t do anything about it until I went for advice about HRT. My blood pressure was off the scale so was put on perindopril & sent for lots of tests to rule out damage to other organs. I was told the tests cost around £1,500 which could explain why they don’t refer everyone.

All was fine & I was lucky. It’s worth asking about further tests but if your blood pressure wasn’t high for very long you are less likely to done any harm.

I’d ensure they also check eGFR. After 6 months post 6 stents I continuously questioned a correlation w BP and bladder urgency. They did scans that showed EF at 79% and LV hyperkinetic ST (something). I pressed as I have still uncontrolled BP’s despite doubling BP meds and adding Amlodipine. Advice was take Nitro liberally.

They tested at my request 3 weeks ago and I am now Stage 3a kidney disease and cholesterol #’s higher. My BP is generally fine in office while daily 148ish/107ish at home. I’m 49 which has been the greatest hurdle of being heard..
