Treatment Options Bypass failure

My husband had triple bypass and valve replacement surgery four years ago. Nee had a heart attach two weeks ago and tests now show two of the replaced arteries are blocked. Doctors say they could either be operated on (?) or no treatment. The no treatment option terrifies us both. Does anyone else have advice or experience of this, please?

Sounds like another by pass operation. Have you been advised to evaluate your diet and activity levels?

No other discussions yet. Waiting for decision on treatment from Broadgreen hospital. He is 75 btw but we'll within the ideal height/weight/lifestyle recommendations

Do you follow any particular diet and take regular exercise?

We eat healthily but could make changes and we will. He walks around 4 miles every day.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Did they say what they mean by operated on. They are never overkeen on performing a second OHS (open heart surgery) as there can be issues with scar tissue, sourcing suitable blood vessels, etc. Stents are the more usual option in this situation.

By no treatment they will be referring to medication and lifestyle changes. Has your husband made all the appropriate changes? A former neighbour had stents but refused to make the lifestyle changes. Before he moved he had further stents on two occasions!

Thanks. Yesterday he had a lifestyle interview and the Dr said it was to assess his fitness for treatment. Dr said his options were stent or nothing but in his opinion he was fit enough for a stent. I'm shocked that they could decide to do nothing. It would be a death sentence. He is very fit, he walks around 4 miles ever day, isn't overweight and our diet is healthy although there are some changes we can make.

My dad had a triple heart bypass says he couldn't go through that again lost alot of weight went down to 8 stone he told me this over phone in 2011 year anyway my sister told me in 201013 year he got alzheimers he was 80 years old at the time he died 2014 year me if I have any problems with health now am not going anywhere near hospital that's my choice there not mirracle workers if the damage is done it can only get worse that's what I think my advice is to rest take it easy dont do too much of everything as it will just make you worse that's what I think

I have had open heart pass surgery and then had to have stents through one of the bypassed arteries which was the LAD . Reason I needed the stents was because the LAD hadn't been bypassed 100% 1st time around .

I am 72 and thought it all went well 2nd time around, now feel pretty good albeit with moderate Heart Failure.

If the Cardiologist said I needed more work I would go for it 100% even if it involved full on surgery again.

Hi I had triple by pass 1999 was fine for 5 yrs ,then one blocked again. Had stent fitted and still ok now 21 yrs later . The stent is only a minor op usually thru the groin,maybe they mean this .Not major surgery again

I hope you don't think I an being intrusive but there is a long running area of interest on this site along the lines why do some people who are apparently fit and well, take exercise and are within normal weight limits, get clogged up arteries to the point of having heart attacks/strokes while others don't. Assuming your sugar and cholesterol are OK, May I ask if your Dr recommended any particular Diet or eating changes?

No and there wasn't any diet recommendations after the valve and bypass surgery 4 years ago. However, we are aware of our diet and I follow slimming world so we eat low fat, restrict red meat, eat fish, skimmed milk etc.

Yes our diet is not too dissimilar. Good news received this afternoon though, he is being taken to Broadgreen tomorrow for treatment.

I had a quadruple bypass at the age of 51 in 2017,i had a heart attack at work and it was discovered that I had genetic heart disease.

I recovered, but had another albeit relatively small mi in August last year. I was told that 1of the grafts wasn't viable but that I am fine with 3 and would be medically treated. Now taking Ticagrelor. It is a rarity that another bypass would be done. Stents are less invasive.

What medications were you taking after your Quad bypass? Are you only on Ticagrelor now?

Asprin, bisoprolol, losartan,, omeprazol, rivorastatin and now ticagrelor. (excuse the spelling) generally you are on them for life.

I guess meds all depend on individual circumstances. When I come off clopidogrel and PPI as I have been told will only be on aspirin. Agree with stents - though as with everything, not perfect.

I am definitely taking baby asparin for life. I was medically treated with Ticagrelor following a second mi in August, cause one of the grafts was not viable. No stent discussed as i was told the other 3 grafts were all working well. Meanwhile a bit more of my heart died. But I'm back to full fitness now.
