Atrail fibrillation getting worse

Hi all,

I am 42. I have had atrail fibrillation for about five years and it has been under control with bisoprolol 10mg. This has crept up from an intital 2.5mg dose originally. However I find myself in af daily and it’s getting worse. I have just given up smoking and that has been easy as a fag would just put me in af. I haven’t taken the af seriously before as I have adhd which I take concerta for. Which is a stimulant! I shouldn’t take them anymore but they help me concentrate on my studies and work. I just don’t know what to do about my af. Any replies welcome. I feel so alone and panicked and my chest hurts...

Hi, I would say speak to your GP. Packing up smoking is an achievement but will cause withdrawals and so will the lack adhd medication. Maybe your body is just trying to get back to its normal sync and this in itself is causing your anxiety levels to rise.. you are not on your own on a site like this.. there is always someone willing to chat.. take deep breaths stick the kettle on..and try and remain calm..x

You need to see a doctor, there are no experts on this forum that can adivse you about medical matters.

I had SVT 10 years ago and was on beta blockers which did not help my condition. My triggers were coffee, chocolate etc. Eventually I got an ablation which cured me, is this something you could ask your doctor about?

Good news on the stopping smoking . Your first major step . There are other steps you can take with diet by reducing weight if you need to , and changing your diet to reduce your sugary foods. You may find that increasing your activity / exercise levels helps as well. Well done,

Have you had cardioversion yet? It's very effective at getting you back into sinus rhythm but often not permanently.

There are several meds which can be taken for AF, flecainide keeps me in SR but the dosage is slowly increasing, you need to see the doc and discuss the options for you, we are all different.

Good about the smoking, but check to see you're not taking any AF triggers, there's quite a list, alcohol is one, liquorice, cold and flu meds, caffiene, heavy exercise, fatigue and of course good old stress to name a few.

You must get treatment as soon as you can because the longer you are in AF the more intractable it becomes.

Good luck
