What's bnp?

Hi

It’s the test for heart failure. I think it’s a hormone thats released when the heart is in distress

When are you due to have your echo?

I haven’t had the appointment through yet. My GP said it wouldn’t be long though

Are you very symptomatic? Can your GP hurry up the appt for you, maybe put you on the cancelled appt list? Please try not too worry too much about HF, it simply means your heart needs a bit of help pumping & meds will help with that. My husband has had HF since at least 2012, there's some in this group who've had HF for 20/3p years.

Thanks for your kind words I will speak to my doctor about hurrying things up a bit

I’m panicking really because my dad died at the age I am now of heart failure. It feels like history repeating itself

I feel a bit hopeless but I know things must have moved on since he died 30 years ago

Thank you again

I totally get your worries, my dad has his first heart attack at 53 and at 59 he had a massive heart attack and 3 cardiac arrests, he did survive them only to die 3 years later ftom cancer. That was 23 years ago, medical science has moved on so much since then, people with HF can & do live almost normal lifespans with lifestyle changes and meds. Only today its been on the news about possible heart transplants using pigs hearts, not ideal for everyone but my husband would go for it. Then there's ongoing research on stem cell treatment to regenerate the heart, that hopefully will be available in a few years.

I had my bnp levels done 2 weeks ago and they came back at 1007. I'm so scared. Don't know if it means heart disease or not. Have a cardiac specialist appointment on 2nd October. Have you heard anything yet?

My BNP was elevated, I was very anxious at first, but my doctor said it was probably due to stressors placed on my heart due to DVT/PE I had earlier last year. My echo turned out good. So, one can have a high BNP and not have HF, and if it is HF, better treatments these days so try not to worry, and do please keep us updated! 😀

In May 2017 when I first had symptoms of heart failure my BNP was 2,086. My GP said she'd had patients with a much higher reading. However, it wasn't good! I'd already had an X-ray and an ECG. I was prescribed Bisoprolol and a diuretic Furosemide. A week later my BNP was down to 1,421. I then had a CT scan on my chest and at the end of that month an echocardiogram. I kept a diary of events. I'm looking at the diary now. I think a high BNP is a good indication of heart failure and I was fast tracked through further diagnostic procedures. So in answer to your question; Yes I have had result higher than yours! So relax. The test is a good diagnostic procedure. Margah

Hello Arto

I have had my BNP tested and my level is 1260. I am waiting for an echo for heart failure test

I really don’t know what the figures say, yours is in the 900’s

I am confused with the figures what should they be?

Is my higher or do they go the other way?

I to have been having sleepless nights but and it’s a big but with modern medications you can live with this, some adjustments to your life but manageable

My echo is in 6 weeks so a long wait

I have all the symptoms breathlessness, extreme exhaustion and cough when laying down

If you or anyone can shed any light in BNP it would def help me understand and hopefully you as well

The North Bristol NHS Trust have a BNP fact sheet. nbt.nhs.uk The higher the BNP the worse the condition. In this case a low score is good.

That should be nbt.nhs.uk

Hello

Thank you for this I have checked it out and I am in the orange area echo/specialist

It is what I thought anyway as my gp has arranged an echo:specialist follow on but not on the urgent route I have to wait 6 weeks which is a long time to have it on your head!
