No, but I wish I did. A friend of mine lives there & we have an open invitation but it's too hilly for Kevin

cowparsley profile image
cowparsley in reply to Lezzers

Hi Lesley, that`s how I first learnt I had heart Failure, couldn`t get up the hills and as I live at sea level I`m surrounded by them but its good for my lungs to do hills every day.Always a silver lining!

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to cowparsley

Do you manage the hills OK? We really were looking to go to Cornwall this year but if we would need to use the car to get anywhere and as I don't drive it would mean Kevin not really getting to see much of it. Plus we tend to go everywhere by train if we can then if he is poorly the car doesn't get abandoned in some obscure car park.

cowparsley profile image
cowparsley in reply to Lezzers

I manage the hills ok but I`m used to them.Kevin`s problems sound worse than mine.Depends where you stay in cornwall. There`s a good train service if you stayed near a station then you could visit lots of places and Kevin wouldn`t have to drive.I very often get the train to Falmouth or Penzance or St Ives, saves parking. Where do you friends live?

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to cowparsley

My friend has told me a million times where she lives but I'm rubbish with things like that, I've just messaged her. His cardiologist always asks how he manages hills & stairs our answer is we live in the fens, not a hill in sight & we live in a bungalow so no stairs!! I did look into doing the overnight sleeper train to Cornwall, certainly not cheap!!

cowparsley profile image
cowparsley in reply to Lezzers

That`s good, living in the Fens in a bungalow.Good advance planning.Rail fares are pricey aren`t they.Did you try off peak fares? x

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to cowparsley

We have a railcard bought with our club card vouchers, didn't cost us a penny!! Its difficult planning in advance with his health, we've had to cancel so many last minute trips that I always take free cancellation options where possible!! As you live in a holiday area, where would you go for a holiday?

cowparsley in reply to Lezzers

I`m going to Cumbria in September and much as I love Italy I want to visit Scotland,Ireland and Wales.I also love going further down into Cornwall and walking the coastal path. Can`t walk as far these days so I drive down then I can do short walks on different stretches of the coast.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to cowparsley

Have been to Cumbria, enjoyed that. Have never been to Ireland, hope to get there one day. Loved Scotland & Wales. Though to be honest, Italy would also be my choice, my sister is off to there next month.

Lezzers in reply to cowparsley

My friend lives in St Austell, apparently that's very hilly.

cowparsley profile image
cowparsley in reply to Lezzers

Yes,I`m afraid most of Cornwall is.Never mind, plenty of more accessible places to visit.Has Kevin admitted yet that he`s married to Superwoman?

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to cowparsley

I'm working on convincing him bout the superwoman bit!! Gunsmoke123 did mumble something bout me being superwoman though!! 😂

I've never been Cornwall 😝 So I have no idea if Iove it or not, now I may have to go see my friend to see if I do. She's surrounded by beaches so fairly sure I'll love it more than you!! Sciliy Isles are on bucket list though!

Melleray profile image
Melleray in reply to Lezzers

Go to Scilly and you will think you have died and gone to heaven!

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to Melleray

Thank you. Which island is the best to stay on & do you know how long the ferry trip across takes?

Melleray profile image
Melleray in reply to Lezzers

I have always stayed on St Mary's as there is more accommodation to be had, and usually cheaper. Then each day you can travel out to whichever island you choose. Everyone gathers on the quay in the mornings where a fleet of large open boats transport people across the water. I think St Martins is my favourite as it is so utterly beautiful. But Pentle Bay on Tresco is so beautiful too, with white sand that sparkles like diamonds. The Hell Bay Hotel on Bryher is a must for lunch!!

The Scillonian ferry from Penzance takes about 2 hours 45 mins. It can be a fab crossing or it can be very choppy, depends on the weather. I have also crossed by helicopter, which only takes 20 mins from Penzance. This service is suspended at the moment, but I believe will be resinstated next year. There is also a small plane which flies from Exeter and Land's End.

I love the whole place!! Do try and go there.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to Melleray

Thank you so much, very informative. I'm not the best sailor, that's a long crossing even if its calm!! Much better on rivers. Can dogs go on the planes/helicopter

Melleray profile image
Melleray in reply to Lezzers

Not sure about that - they certainly go on the boat. Yes, the crossings outward for me have been dodgy, one in particular! But back has always been okay. I believe this is something to do with the tides.

I loved the story of the baby born on the Coast guard helicopter last year ....baby arrived caught by the midwife mid flight on board on the way to Cornwall.

Place of birth on the birth certificate will be interesting!

It won't be a problem, the Janners will let you cross the Tamar, just tell them you know me, a Guzz rating through and through.

St Budeaux and Drake Barracks used to be my Home.

This doesn’t help! But I used to live in Cornwall Falmouth then Grampound. Lived there for 30 years then moved to the North East which has a fabulous coastline it’s just different to the Cornish one. Still keep in touch with my friends and visit occasionally.

I’m sure you will meet others on this site if you check out this link on the BHF site there are groups at Redruth Truro Newquay and St. Austell if that helps bhf.org.uk/-/media/files/he...

Take care. Zena x

You are not on your own. It was struggling up these hills made me check out with my GP why I was no longer fit. Never thought I would have cardio problems on my diet and lifestyle! I would not move from Cornwall but how I envy those that live on Lincolnshire or Norfolk. Lovely and flat.

cowparsley profile image
cowparsley

Me too.Healthy diet, plenty of exercise, never overweight then Boom,HF hits me.I`d never leave Cornwall either even though the hills get bigger every day!

I love how some of the threads on here develop. This started off as a simple question of "Does anyone else on here live in Cornwall", then cheese was mentioned, and the idea that Cornwall was a cheese free zone. Then we moved to hills vs flat places, then rail fares, then some wistful reflections about the canals of Birmingham with the sun glinting off the half submerged shopping trolleys, followed by an accusation of being on the pink stuff, and finally going all the way around to the subject of hills again. Marvellous

Hi All my family live there and I'm down regularly. In fact I was treated at Treliske for emergency stenting after having HA when I did the Santa run. I have to say that they were superb in the Cardiac team, far better treatment than I've had from Basingstoke Hospital, who have basically ignored me

Yes you can from the beach.I expect you were going to Pier cellars it`s still used for cadet trainingI used to kayak over to see the fireworks from the water when I was a fresh faced 50 something!Stupid thing to do,it was like crossing a motorway in the dark. Those days are long gone alas.x

Prada47 profile image

Being in the Engine Room Branch we didn't need Gun Training we used to invite people in with a warm welcome and ask " Any Fags, or Drink " always saves having a Fight !! . I still like to see Plymouth Sound and the Breakwater when it's on Spotlight SW. Just looked it's 122 miles to Plymouth so maybe a run down that way soon. Long time since being in Union Street and the " Prince Regent Long Bar on a Saturday Night lol oh not forgetting the NAFFI up on the Hoe.

cowparsley profile image
