Reducing bisoprolol

Hi All, I have been on 5mg of bisoprolol daily for two years after two episodes of SVT in close succession. I have had no events since 2017 and the arrhythmia nurse has suggested I try and come off the bisoprolol or reduce it and instead keep a 'pill in the pocket' in case i have an event. So I have been advised to drop my dose down from 5mg to 2.5mg at first ...however, I am quite nervous about this...does anyone have any advice or experiences? My worst fear is another event as they are scary and have required adenosine in the past which isn't pleasant.

Sorry, I don’t have a ton of advice, just wanted to say good luck. I’m on 25 mg metoprolol for svt. I’m coming off it for an ablation in about two months. They said I could just stop it a week before the procedure but I’ve heard you should wean. I’m afraid of an episode too. It makes me feel awful. How do you feel on the meds? What pill in the pocket did they offer you? Also, are you in the states? If so there’s a nasal spray drug in trials. You could try to get in on that. It’s supposed to convert svt quickly. I’ve opted for the ablation because I have two little kids and can’t keep waiting for the next episode. I’ve had two as well.

Hi there, thanks for replying. Yes, I think it would safer to wean yourself off, particularly as 25mg is quite a high dose. I'm 2 days into the 2.5mg currently. They suggested keeping a bisoprolol as pill in the pocket...I asked would this respond quickly enough and they seemed to think it would. They offered me an ablation a couple of years back but I felt like it was a big deal for something that troubles me infrequently. Apart from the two episodes within a month in 2017, prior to that I had one in 2011 and 2012. I have actually been ok on the meds, felt rubbish for the first few days and fine ever since. I'm in the UK and haven't heard about the nasal spray. That sounds interesting as I have had to adenosine twice which isn't a pleasant experience although it is over in seconds. Good luck with your ablation, keep us posted on here 😊
