I am 4 weeks post emergency heart valve repair surgery due to infective endocarditis. I was just wondering if anyone is able to tell me what their scar looked like at this stage? I’ve been advised to keep the dressings on, however the top and bottom still have black (I assume dry blood) bumps over where the scar is and little bits on the main part of the scar. Is this normal at this stage?
Thanks

Hi there, yes it sounds perfectly normal at this stage. You should have been advised on care whilst in hospital but basically remove the dressing before showering and just let the shower water run over it, don't use soaps just yet and use a different towel to pat that area dry.
The bumps will lessen over time, they are just where the stitches have been placed
After your shower make sure the wound area is completely dry before reapplying the dressing - have you got fresh dressings? You can dry by using a hair dryer make sure it's on cool setting as this avoids touching the wound.
