When to go to hospital

Felt ill all day Wednesday pain just wouldn't go away so went to A&E ended up staying in hospital for 2 nights even though each and blood tests showed nothing wrong they said just to be on safe side after previous SCAD thing is I get chest pains so often I usually just ignore it it's hard to know when to seek help I felt such a fraud in hospital

Think we all have trips to hospital that turn out to be an all clear verdict and we all feel guilty about it. However, they kept you in for two nights - they weren't sure either what was going on. You are not a fraud - you have already had one serious event - you're a human being who needs help at that time and A and E is there to provide it. Easy to say but harder to believe.....

After I had stents fitted, over the course of the following year, I had 6 blue light trips into hospital because of angina and near collapse. Every time the paramedics said that symptoms were serious enough to take me to A&E. The problem is that A&E will keep you there until you are stable and then send you home. After a year and another angiogram they discovered that I needed another stent. Been great ever since.

My wife was recently taken by paramedics for suspected heart problems from high BP and there was an interesting comment from the doctor. He said that A&E couldn't refer anyone to a cardiologist because issues with blood pressure were seen as a problem that GPs had to deal with. However when her BP kept climbing they kept her in overnight and next morning she found herself on the cardiologist's list!

You now your body and if things aren't right you just have to keep plugging away.

Haha, sorry to laugh, Gunsmoke, but yes, I know that reaction. I think it's the reverse of white coat syndrome - our body sees a doctor coming towards us and all the pain or other symptoms immediately run off and hide behind our back!

Sorry to hear you're getting a lot of ongoing chest pain Kizza. It seems to be something that many SCAD patients especially suffer from, probably more so than after heart attacks from other causes. I believe the thinking is that it may be the dissection healing that causes the pain, and though it may take some time the pains will eventually fade. I can appreciate that it is difficult to know which are those which will pass and those that need attention. I was 'lucky' in that I didn't get any chest pains after my first SCAD so when I did get pain again (actually in my arms - no pain in chest either time!) I knew it needed attention. Don't ever let the feeling of being a fraud or time-waster stop you from getting medical help if you need it. It's a boring cliche but true all the same - 'better safe than sorry'!!

Kizza. I tried to find this before I posted the above. Dr Adlam, who of course is the main man in the UK as far as SCAD goes, gave a talk at last year's SCAD Conference during which he mentions chest pain - around 42 minutes in. Hope this helps.

Thank you I've found it its very interesting enjoyed listening to him how good would it be if they came up with some answers to why it happens then perhaps they could stop them happening all wishful thinking😀😀
