Hi

I have to watch my cholesterol and I have IBS.

Could any one tell me the best diet to follow if you have more than one health problem.

I did see a dietitian but she was not much help.

I was looking at breakfast cereals, and some are ok for cholesterol but they seem to have to much sugar.

I wish I could get individual advice for my health and diet, but private dietitians cost to much.

Any help is appreciated

Many thanks

Junie

I am the same. I've recently had OHS, on Warfarin and have Diverticulitis/ IBS. I have put on weight and really struggling with my diet. I don't have much knowledge of what is good to eat on Warfarin etc which won't set off my bowel issues. I have asked my rehab nurse to refer me to dietician and have a telephone consultation in 2 weeks. I just think the dietician is going to give general advice rather than individual advice. Good luck.

Are you taking a statin for your cholesterol? If the answer is yes, then just focus on a diet that is 'good' for your IBS. If the answer to the first is no, then it might be worth a chat with your GP about statins. A diet rich in veg, pulses, seeds, nuts with low saturated fat, smaller portions of meat etc., tend to be what is recommended for cholesterol management if statins are a no-no (for whatever reason), but I have no knowledge of whether that is good or bad for IBS.

No statins at the moment.

I am a vegetarian. The dietitian told me no soya, that’s tricky for me.

Same problem here. I have to have a low fibre diet for my IBS. Asked GP if I could speak to a dietician and was told they don't exist now ie this Health Authority won't pay for them.

That’s why we are not getting Better, they do not have time to talk to us, if they just helped us to help ourselves, it would save many appointments.

I just wanted some advice on reducing cholesterol. It's so confusing. Is the spread I use ok/ How often should I have it? Is milk really dangerously full of fats? Am I doing right with the way I've changed my diet? I can't bear oily fish or fish of any sort and certainly can't eat high fibre or stuff like lentils. Yesterday I saw an advert for Benecol and Flora Pro Active which said "Guaranteed to reduce cholesterol" but then read an article that said they produce plant type cholesterol which is dangerous and criticised the British Heart Foundation for linking up with the manufacturers and promoting them. It said statins were dangerous and had bad side effects and that everyone needs a certain level of cholesterol or why else would it say that pregnant women must not use spreads with plant sterols. I do believe that diet is the way to go to get a healthy level of cholesterol rather than statins but how the heck do you do it and balance it with other health problems when just eating fruit affects my IBS. Even the consultant said my cholesterol levels are absolutely fine so why does he want me on statins for 6 months? It's a minefield. All the cardiac rehab nurse said was "Look at the British Heart foundation for recipes.

Oh that is so confusing.

We should all get together and get the nutrition books out.

I totally agree that what to eat is not easy. I don't have IBS but do have high cholesterol (awaiting an appointment at the lipid clinic) and am on warfarin. What gets me is that I am an intelligent and educated woman but still find food labelling confused. Why cannot all food labelling be standardized, some supermarkets use a traffic light system so that a busy shopper can see at a glance what is high fat and what is lower !

I have IBS and other bowl problems had it from 1972 I fined that anything with high Acid like fruit or sugar like chocolate or cake sets it of. I have high blood fats and statins do not like me so morning I have grilled bacon with no fat or porridge lunch have 1 tin of sardines in 2 slices of bread for dinner poached fish cod or sea trout with peas and sweat corn and every other day I have a normal small dinner small meat and 2 or 3 veg. I drink water or tea and once a week for a treat have 1 coke and a chock bar had blood test and the blood fats are low had 3 stents fitted in June 14th this year and I have lost 2 and a half stone don't ask me what that is in KG I have no idea I do not smoke never have and have a brandy now and then give it a try the problem with I.B.S. is every one has a differant food that trigger's it so the best is to eat the food that suits you If I have corn flakes for breakfast or coffee I would be on the toilet for hours the good thing about fish it's easy on your stomach and it's filling so you do not want anything afterwards and sardines are cheap Aldi in tommarto 32p a can a cheap lunch
