suggestions for scar cream/ gel

Hi I had an AVR (mech valve) and bypass in April and just wondered if anyone has any suggestions for cream to put on the scar

I’ve used Bio oil and Five flowers cream but it’s still quite itchy

I wondered what the silicone gels were like as they come up quite a bit online but not sure if they are safe though

Got any ideas I must confess Ive read a lot of posts but not asked any thing before as I’m quite new and haven’t done my profile either yet

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Try some kelocote before you get dressed, puts a silicon barrier over the scar to protect it and for me did ease the itching

I had the sternal fixings from my AVR removed recently and am also using the kelocote silicon gel morning and evening. It's also important to keep your scar out of the sun for a year at least.

Thanks yes I’ve been keeping it covered from the sun and how long ago did you have your op before the sternal fixings had to be removed and were they giving you trouble?

Two years - they were very close to the surface and painful so I eventually asked if they could be removed.

Oh no I’ve got that to look forward too then

How were you after that op and were you as nervous about having that done as I imagine .

Sorry for all these questions but really interested to know

Thanks for asking that question. I’m seeing my surgeon this week to plan my AVR and have a million questions but now know the answer to this one! Hope you’re well on the road to recovery!! Xx

Very few people have any problems with their sternal fixings. I have an allergy to the metal in the wires so had plastic ties instead which were very large and I'm thin. I knew it was a very minor operation so I wasn't actually nervous at all, just pleased to have it done!

Hope your recovery is going well.

Oh thanks for that I hope you are doing ok now

Yes I’m doing much better now it’s a long haul as I had a few problems with my liver afterwards but all fine now and everyone is different but all of a sudden you start feeling ‘I’m getting there now ‘

Great to be able to ask these questions and I found cardio rehab really helpful too x

Hi Wigg2 welcome to the forum, and for sharing your story. I had a triple bypass in March and have been using bio oil twice a day and when its dry during the day I use just Vaseline. Hope you can find something that works for you soon. x

Thanks for the tip x

How are you doing now ? I only had one bypass but my left side chest is still quite sore but that’s probably because they used the mammary artery

I'm doing ok, my mammary arteries were used so my chest is sore still. Find if I stretch high, like pegging out washing, its a bit sore. I am sleeping fine, find it hard to sleep on my right side for any length of time but it is improving. Have you done cardio rehab yet?

Yes I’ve done my rehab and been discharged so I’m looking to do a one to one at the local gym with someone who is cardio trained

Had avr in January. Have used bio oil with great success

Bio oil seems the go to scar treatment once the op site is fully healed although I've started using vitamin e oil and using a 50 spf lip creme to avoid any potential UV damage. White, pink, white vertical stripe developing nicely!

Jason’s Vitamin E (25,000iu) cream from the health shop. My husband had a large cancer scar and I gave him this cream. His consultant said he had never seen such a quick healing scar and wanted the name of the cream.

It is excellent!

Hi was that the moisturiser that he used ?

Patches2 profile image
Patches2 in reply to Wigg2

It is a thick cream in a small tub. I think about 75mls or grams. Get the 25,000 iu as they do 15,000 is as well. I should be about £10? Well worth the money.

I was using the Jason’s Vitamin E cream last night and noticed that it said on the label that it was moisturizing cream. I have been using it for so long that I had forgotten what was written on the label! Good luck with it. You won’t be disappointed.
