Hi Presco,

I am glad that you are thinking about work. I had a heart attack just under 7 weeks ago and had 3 stents put in. My Consultant didn’t want me to return to work for 4 weeks, which my GP extended to 6 weeks. Therefore, I am going back to work on Monday on a Phased Return starting with 15 hours a week and by week 7 the aim is to be back full time. I think it all depends on your physical and mental state as well as the type of job you do. Mine is desk based and I work from home. Hope this helps. Good luck.

My understanding is that you can return to p/t work about the time you can resume driving. With elective stents it is around a fortnight but if emergency and/or heart attack a month subject to your GP's advice. With a bypass it is six weeks for elective and three months for emergency/heart attack, again subject to medical advice. In the case of a severe HA these times can be extended considerably. The type of work also has to be considered. These timescales would typically be for someone driving a desk and not subjected to severe stress. For heavier work you need to take advice. I suspect you are probably OK to return to work but check with your GP first. You may need to double up on some jobs depending on the care being given.

Thanks for reply Michael ....I definitely will check with cardio team at my next visit ..Tues and my go advice to .....

Hi and welcome. After my HA and stent fitting was advised not to go back to work until GP cleared me. In the event it was about 4 weeks, but everyone is different and depends on your recovery. Words of advice you will get tired so be careful, listen to your medical team and your body. If you can get to rehab please do, the teams are great and get you going again.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Wen u are able to cope I guess, nothing wrong with part time. I’ve done part time work before a heart op and probably will need to do part time wen I go back to work.

I went back to work 12 weeks after my Heart Attack as a full time 38hrs Baker, I had to be given the OK by my company occupational health department. I went back then because my company only paid sick pay for the first 12 weeks! I was offered light duties but having been a baker for over 40 years i decided it was all or nothing and it was the right decision, it was tough at first but I didn't regret it. You can read my story in the BHF booklet 'Returning to work after a Heart Attack' This was 8 years ago and i have since retired at 65 and touch wood have only had one angina episode since. Hope that helps.

Hi Presco , I would definitely speak to your GP about this and seek their opinion but it's great that you're feeling ready :)

The BHF also has some info and support on this: bhf.org.uk/heart-health/liv...
