congenital heart disease/ menopause

Hi, does anyone know if hrt can be taken when you have congenital heart disease. I have been suffering from palpitations for years, probably since peri menopause, now post menopause I have been told my palpitations are probably caused by low estrogen levels. Any advise would be appreciated thanks.

HI,

I would ask your specialist about this. Don't forget that you cannot stay on HRT forever - or at least according to one friend I have who has recently come off after about 10 years. She managed to avoid menopausal symptoms for the last years she was in work - they were so bad that she really couldn't cope but of course now she gets them at 65 instead of 55. I have no experience being a man but the people to ask are the medical professionals maybe there is something that you can take other than HRT to get oestrogen back up? Hope you find an answer to your query,

Hi chrissy99,

Some women who are going through the menopause may be more aware of their heart beating (palpitations). If you experience this, see your GP. For most women the palpitations are harmless and don’t mean anything is wrong with the heart, but your GP may wish to give you a check-up to be sure.

We have a great page with lots of information about the pros and cons of HRT treatment in relation to heart disease here- bhf.org.uk/heart-health/liv...

I would recommend discussing it further with your GP who will be able to assess your suitability.

Take care,

Emily

Thank you Desanthony, I have asked various health professionals in the past, and I'm finding that they just don't seem to be clued up when it comes to the dreaded hormones!! I will however ask my gp to refer me to a meno/clinic and hopefully get to see a specialist who can help...
