Hi Sharon! I’m also 48 and was diagnosed with HF 5 weeks ago. It’s a massive shock isn’t it? I feel quite overwhelmed with it, but this group are fantastic! I’ve posted loads of questions and everyone is so helpful and kind! One piece of advice I was given on here is, don’t Google anything , it can be quite depressive! The British Heart Foundation website is really good for information, but you probably already know this 😊.

There’s so much support on here, so please try and stay positive, I made the decision that it’s not going to rule my life! Message me if you need a chat!

Take care,

Fi x

Hi Sharon. I was diagnosed with heart failure six (and a bit) years ago when I was 31. I have had my ICD for five years now. I was really miserable about my diagnosis for a good couple of years, but I'm very happy with my lot now. Once your medication doses are at the optimum level and the ICD has settled in, you will start to feel more confident in your heart/body again and should be able to get back to life as normal, albeit with a couple of tweaks - maybe a bit more time to rest and a bit more focus on healthy living. The early days post-diagnosis are really tough, but things will get easier. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or worries you think I could help with. Lots of love x

They don’t even know what caused mine. My dad had a stroke a long time ago he was the only person to have problems with his heart. Sharon

Hi Sharon, my diagnosis is the same as yours. No family history, no obvious cause. I'd like to pass on some invaluable advice given to me on this forum when I received my diagnosis: 1: ignore the horrible term HF, what you have is a heart that is a bit wonky. 2: everybody on this forum has a wonky heart so you are not alone we all know how you are feeling and are on your side. 3: DON'T Google your wonky heart, when going online to learn about your condition and/or ICD implant stick with BHF, CHSS, NHS Inform websites ignore everything else. 4: Stay positive...keep smiling. Sharon with a wonky heart is still Sharon don't let it define you x

Hi Thank you for the advice I try not to google it but it’s hard. When I was in hospital they gave me a big book about hf from the British Heart Foundation I haven’t read it for a long time. Sharon x

I had a heart attack at 49, two and a half years ago.I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, atriel fibrillation and heart failure.I am obese and I used to be a binge alcohol drinker, but kept myself active in my job as a self employed carpenter. I never took any illegal drugs when I was younger and have kept myself reasonably fit and active, through exercise and my job during my younger days, I have worked most of my life in industry. But now I have been told not to do any heavy lifting, or too physical activities.Which is not good because, I was a qualified carpenter and worked in the construction industry.I have not worked in the time since my hospital visit and have been on sick benefits ,a disibility benefit, and a previous work pension which I could take at 50 years old.I don't know whats happening next, as I don't know how long it will be before I have an assesment with the DWP and they will say I am capable for work.Which I am definately not fit enough to do anymore,as I get breathless and tired very easy, when just walking my dog. This is causing a lot of anxiety within me , leading to depression.I have never been trained to work in any other type of work and have always lead a physical working career.I am 52 , now.Much too young to be like this , my official retirement age is 67, which is 15 years away.
