I have a condition called psoriatic arthritis. I've been on methotrexate for 5 years and still cannot tolerate it. Side effects include sickness, nausea, a weird noise in my head and lve had a persistent cough since before Christmas. I'm under a reumotologist and a dermatologist but in spite of telling them the side effects I have never been offered an alternative medication only an alternative method of taking it ie injection.
I do have several other condition s including diabetes so maybe that's the reason why I've never been offered alternanaive meds.
My question is are there other alternatives treatments. I would appreciate any advice as I feel this medication is taking away my quality of life

I wish i knew the answer to this too. Im not sure if Methotrexate is actually doing anything for me because at first it cleared my psoriasis on my scalp but now that has come back just as bad as it used to be before going on the medication. My pain in controlled by pain relief but my joints are sore, tingly and creak like mad especially my knees. The rheumatologist did suggest increasing the dose but im not so sure i want to do that . My friend take CBD Oil which seems to work for her but i dont like the taste and havent tried to capsule form yet but that is one you could try ? Sorry if this isnt useful.
I’ve also got Psa and Oa and fibo. I’m also on methotrexate to name but a few. Also got same problem was lovely and clear for last couple of years but now my psoriasis are coming back and also feel like talking to myself about them since doctors and hospital seem to block out what I’m saying 🙂
I am on the NRAS forum and there’s often discussion there about mtx and it’s side effects, and many people who have switched to the injections have found them to be hugely better - worth discussing with your rheumatologist.
My husband has psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The skin problem developed first about 10 years ago and he was given creams and phototherapy firstly which did not help, it just spread. Then he was given methotrexate which he could not tolerate because of the side effects. Then the dermatologist gave him cyclosporine. That didn’t stop the spread either. Then he developed multiple joint pain which was the arthritis starting. So to cut a long story short they started him on Humira a biologic. Injections every 2 weeks. This did work but not for the arthritis ( was very painful) so they gave him naproxen and codeine for this. This didn’t stop the joint pain but the psoriasis was almost gone. Anyway about 9 months ago they gave him a different biologic called Stelara an injection every 12 weeks. Now is body is completely cleared of the skin problem and now takes Etoricoxib 90 mg tablets and Leflunomide 10mg tablets a DMARD. His joint pains are much better too.
Ask about Biologics. I think you would benefit from them.
I take humira which is amazing .. it's a biologic and injection 2 a month .. the problem is it's very expensive, I also suffer from psoriatic arthritis and this is the only med that keeps everything in remission while on this biologic.
I refused to take it after looking it up and was sacked by my doctors, having said that I do not regret my decision. I eat a whole food plant based diet which is shown to reduce inflammation and I fast here and there. If you are on diabetes meds or some other medications it prevents you from fasting. Fasting works for both psoriatic arthritis and diabetes but you would need medical supervision. In the States there is a place called The True North Health Center who do medically supervised water only fasting.
If its type 2 diabetes, the cause of that is eating animal protein and fats, madly a low carb diet is prescribed for people with type 2, Diabetes Research UK's diet would induce type 2 diabetes in some one who does not suffer from it!
