I was given Colchicine for my ulcers but can't take then because of my stomach... Maybe he wasn't sure with all the other stuff your on or your other symptoms.... I know my out of hours GP doesn't like giving me anything apart from steroids and painkillers cause he doesn't know about Behcets and doesn't like taking chances... Not fun for you though whilst you wait for another doc... I hope you feel better soon x

My daughter suufers badly with them and they admit her and put her on iv steroids, they will eventually get them under control but it does and can take a very long time.

I'm sorry you were not given anything to help.

I'm assuming the doc you saw is not familiar with you, your case and possibly not BD either.

If you haven't already, I suggest you type ulcers and any related word you can think of into the search box. You will find lots of tips and suggestions about things you can do yourself and these may at least give you some temporary relief until you can get appropriate medical treatment. There is also a fact sheet about ulcer treatments on the Society website.

I suggest that you print off the factsheet and add anything not on it that you find useful from the website, and take it with you if you have to go to out of hours or see someone unfamiliar with your situation and condition. You can do this with any of the factsheets, or perhaps always have the 'overview' information sheet with you.

Treatment for BD is so variable that people who are not familiar with it may not fully understand the purpose of taking certain meds in the context of your condition which can make them.understandably cautious about prescribing further meds.

You can also ask your doctor or specialist to write a letter briefly listing your regular meds (or keep a copy of your repeat prescriptions with you if you have one) and noting other treatments that can be used/help in particular circumstances.

I always have a letter, med list and description of BD with me and I also have contact numbers for my specialists, including out of hours advice numbers.

I forgot to add, you can ask your specialist to give you a prescription to use when needed, or to use straight away so you have some rememdies in stock, such as soluble prednisolone to gargle with, as soon as these ulcers start. You can also gargle with soluble asprin but I would seek the approval of your specialist before you do this as I am not medically trained and am just sharing one of things that helps me. Along with 'home remedies, such as sucking ice lollies etc, this can help to damp things down and make it more bearable while you recover.

Among other things, I also use anaesthetic spray, asthama inhalers (a popular medication with BD patients) and holding ice cold water in my mouth then gargling.

Hi ya I have suffered with ulsers for years and years and not one docotor will give me anything for then even when there about 30 in my mouth and throat and cant eat and drink very little for weeks on end :-(

I have found a trick of my own that dose help a little but not a cure I rince my mouth with warm salt water twice to three times every day and I dont not use normal tooth paste I am at the moment buying tooth paste online with no Sodium or very low amount. This has helped a little and means they dont get a big or as aggressive but I still get the same ammount tho :-(

hope this helps you too

Take care Nicky

Hi I have had BDfor more than 25 years and this is what I do (with my prof's blessing) whenI get an ulcer flare up anywhere (mouth, throat around my nose, vagina and anus) Its best to start the treatment immediately so I always have extras on hand. You need a 100gm clenil inhaler and a spay. The inhaler is for mouth and down below the spray for the nose. Forget about the instructions just zap each ulcer at least twice and upto 4/5 times a day reducing as they recede. This works for me. Also another tip that I discovered by chance. When I get really bad flares and can't even drink water ( have been admitted to hopsital 3 times for dehydration) I find coca cola seems to ease the pain for a little while. Hope this helps. And don't worry you are not alone!!!!

Another fan of asthma sprays here. I find they reduce the time they last quite dramatically.
