Okay so this is probably really simple but I'm just curious on the science behind it,if I were to stop taking the contraceptive pill would the doctors beable to tell from blood tests

Dear Bella,

In theory, it's possible to test directly for the presence (or absence in your case) of the synthetic hormonal components of the pill in a blood sample (or their metabolites excreted in urine), but that would require quite sophisticated laboratory resources that would usually only be available in a research or private lab setting.

Taking the combined pill suppresses ovarian function and so endogenous levels of oestradiol and progesterone are depressed; so if you stop the pill these levels normalise and could, in theory, be an indirect indication. Testosterone levels decrease on the combined pill, but return to normal on stopping, which could be another marker.
