Not taking pill break

On the combined pill, if you do not take the pill break what will happen

Nothing at all usually. It is absolutely safe to run pill packs together . The advice used to be that you only need to have a bleed one every 3 months - in other words you could safely run 3 packs together. The new advice is that you can run apcks together for as long as you want - but once you start to get some breakthrough bleeding, to then not take pills for four days , then back on the pill again. It all depends what suits you. This is the faculty guidance - its a bit technical I have changed some words.

Traditional (standard) 21/7 combined pill cycles were designed to induce a bleed each month, mimicking

naturally occurring menstrual cycles. There is, however, no health benefit from a monthly withdrawal

bleed, and the 7-day break has the following drawbacks:

►► Withdrawal bleeding may be heavy, painful or simply unwanted.

►► The break may be associated with symptoms such as headache and mood change.

►► Ovarian suppression is reduced, Errors in pill-taking (or patch or ring use) around the

break could result in extension of the break, risk of ovulation, and thus potential risk of pregnancy.

Tailored (non-standard) pill regimens reduce the frequency of breaks (extended regimens), abolish

the break (continuous regimens) and/or shorten the break . Using tailored regimens, women can reduce

or avoid hormone free (break ) -associated symptoms and could potentially reduce the risk of escape ovulation and

resulting contraceptive failure.
