Contraception methods

Hi I am currently on the combined pill, and I am looking to either get the implant or an IUD/IUS, and wondered what was best. I would like to know if either are particularly painful, and what has a higher risk of going wrong, and generally people's experiences with them

There is no "best " it all depends on a womans preferences and some other factors like bleeding, PMS , acne etc . The failure rate with all of these types is very low. Some women find a coil insertion very easy, other women less so. Try this webpage : sexwise.fpa.org.uk/contrace...

It's worth noticing that there is one HUGE difference between the copper coil and the hormonal one: the copper coil does not stop your period but the hormonal coil frequently DOES stop women's periods.

The copper coil can result in heavier menstruation too.

Personally I loved mine. I'm getting a replacement reinserted in two weeks; the only reason I didn't have the old one taken out and the new one put in is that I am a fainter and my blood pressure decided that the floor was a nice place to be.

But insertion wasn't too bad - I have a retroverted uterus which can increase the risk of it being difficult or perforating the uterus (the risk of which is normally about 1 in 1000, so very low) - but insertion wasn't unbearable. Removal was honestly nothing to write home about (like, I barely felt it being taken out) even though I nearly fainted but it wasn't because it hurt.

Personally, I found with both the hormonal IUD and the implant that my appetite was majorly increased. Although there’s no scientific evidence of weight gain with hear methods of contraception, I definitely gained weight with both. I had this constant urge to eat all the time and was so hungry nothing seemed to make me feel full! I bled the entire 9 months with the implant and it increased the pain I would already have. Overall they both made me miserable but I spent months after months trying to get it out and they kept refusing! Kept telling me to ‘wait a little longer’ and it would just get worse and no one would listen to me. I previously was on the pill but I missed a few at some points and that’s why I wanted a more reliable form of contraception. Which, they both definitely are. Everyone takes differently, I have friends who haven’t had any issues with it and I know people who have. I think it just depends on the person! I don’t want to put you off having it but was just my personal experience xx
