Yes, it is very important to use a condom the first and the next, next, next time you have sex. Condoms prevent pregnancy and also the important sexual health infections that you really don't want! You need to protect yourself against chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV etc... When you are in a settled one-to-one relationship, then you can talk to him about both of you getting tests for these STIs and then maybe stop using condoms. The safest period is from CD5 to CD10 and CD18 to till you get your AF, provided your menstrual cycle is a clockwork and of exact 28-29 days. Date keeping isn't a very effective contraceptive measure. It's meant for ideal situations but in practice, there are very few women who have the exact same cycle length or ovulation date for each of their menstruation cycle which makes the application of this voluntary abstaining very risky. Plus, there's more than just pregnancy that can affect when you skip protection... and trust me they are far worse than getting pregnant.
