I was looking up ABA therapy and found if you reward with food you get a result, teaching with sound or object

So going to try

I think this will be hard to do, because he does not use memory normally to pick up items - he is given only one choice - I am thinking of giving two choices! - one if he fails.

ABA unfortunately only 'works' to hide problems. Generally what autistic children need instead is for their parent to learn their way of communicating - usually they want to do the right thing but are overwhelmed and can't work out what you want. Making sure the environment is calm and quiet and they aren't in scratchy clothes, sitting with them and letting them show you what they're doing and thinking is a better start to connect and let you learn how to communicate without causing more panic and distress is much harder than basic conditioning, but better for longer term outcomes.

I picked out two picture blocks and found he was giving to me. Although sometimes not on the right verbal prompt. He has started speaking, "more", "hello" and "need" I don't know whether this is due to his confidence in handing me the pieces or art and craft work he enjoys fiddling with but something seems to have worked!
