Hi Dory

Vertigo is related to SCA 6. The following link is for the Ataxia UK publication about SCA 6,

ataxia.org.uk/data/files/in...

Best Wishes

Thanks Harriet, I have seen this publication, but someone else with SCA6 visiting the ataxia centre in Sheffield asked about vertigo & the consultant said it was coincidence! Hence my confusion. I couldn't find anything else on the Ataxia UK website about vertigo, but perhaps I didn't look in the right places?

Oh goodness, I understand why you are confused. Can I ask, do you attend the ataxia centre in Sheffield as well?

Apologies if this comes up twice Harriet, I replied but it disappeared! I'll try again.

I was seen in Oxford by Professor Talbot for blood tests confirming SCA6 ( another family member had a previous diagnosis). I had been presymptomatic but have been having problems with vertigo (unable to drive or go to work). I have been rereferred to Oxford.

Hi Dory

There are different types of vertigo and as far as I can see the type of vertigo associated with SCA6 is quite specific. It might be that the person you know who has SCA6 has an unrelated type of vertigo.

My suggestion would be when you get your appointment through for the ataxia centre in Oxford that you explain what you have said to me of how your confusion has come about and maybe take a copy of the Ataxia UK publication along.

I attend Sheffield Ataxia clinic and have severe vertigo, I have had vertigo for years but it is getting worse as I get older, and I was told at the clinic in Sheffield that vertigo can be related to but not a definititive effect of SCA6
