Focussing and vision-short episodes of blurred vision

Anyone having problems with focussing? This has started quite recently - I can see OK but I'm having problems with short episodes of blurred vision which come on and last for a few minutes then go again. It's both long and close vision.

My eyes are behaving much more now, but for about 5 years I have had trouble. They became very light sensitive. I was even referred to an eye specialist at the neurology hospital. They monitored me for a year, and were worried I was getting optic nerve atrophy. Luckily it all seemed to settle.

I still need photochromic lenses and good sunglasses. I used to have to lie in a dark room for a couple of minutes for my eyes to settle. After bright lights (and sometimes for no obvious reason) my eyes would sort of spasm with bright flashes around the edges. It was similar to how you feel when you first go outside on a very bright day, but lasted for several minutes! Very scary. This happened for about 2 years.

I have a really good optician. He says my eyes are very good really, but it is the messages to the brain which is getting a bit jumbled.

It sounds similar to you, so hopefully yours will stop after a while, sunglasses MIGHT help too?

I have a similar problem, experiencing blurred vision - often accompanied by excessive watering of the eyes.

It appears randomly during the day, but always appears in the evening.

Is this an Ataxia symptom? I am due to see an eye clinic about this in two weeks time and would love to know what to say to them - eg if it is an Ataxia symptom.

Hi Wyndam- I suspect it is a feature of ataxia-but I don't know actually. The neurologists always want to see how my eyes are functioning and up till now I haven't had problems but this has come on quite rapidly. I wondered if it was a migraine over several days but I get these so infrequently ( overindulging on the chocolate and wine does it for me) i don't think it is this.

Severe Iritis left me with longterm damage in my left eye. Without glasses containing a high

value prism, double vision combined with Ataxia is very debilitating. I have also had experience of Nystagmus and blurred vision. Fluorescent lights, and poorly lit areas are both

an aggravation. My glasses have a dark tint and outdoors I often wear specially large sunglasses over them.

My OH gets blurry vision and watery eyes and has been diagnosed with idiopathic (ie we don't know) CA after 7 years of being ill and seems to be getting worse. He's rarely able to go out and often stays in bed all day. He's had a lumbar puncture as well as several MRIs, blood tests, etc but no one seems able to help apart from prescribing a variety of meds such as propanalol, amitriptyline, etc, none of which helped but actually made him feel worse with the severe side effects. He's been told he "could be in a wheelchair in 5 years" but, without a firm diagnosis, how can they know? He describes his symptoms as "a constant pressure" on his head, plus the blurry, watering eyes, unsteadiness and tiredness. The only definite sign is nystagmus which some doctors have described as "subtle". He is under the Neurological Hospital in Queens Square London but everything seems to have drawn to a halt. Any ideas? He's tried cutting out coffee, chocolate, bread, cereal etc and taking vitamin C and D supplements but nothing seems to make a difference. Oddly enough his balance is good; better than mine, in fact, unless he is actually falling over. Thanks.
