What is the correct procedure of blue badge use while visiting England or Wales?

I'm from Scotland where there is no limit to how long a Blue badge holder can park. I just stop, display my badge on the dashboard and leave the car without worrying about having to get back on time. I'm not sure how it works in England.

Here in Rotherham most places give a 3 hour limit for parking , but do display this if that is the case, also they will say no return for 2 hours, meaning you can not drive out of the space and straight back in, you must wait 2 hours to occupy that spot again. many of the public car parks etc you still have to pay and display even with a blue badge .

In England and Wales, Blue Badge holders may generally park:

- on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, unless there is a ban on loading or unloading

- at 'on-street' parking meters and pay-and-display machines for free and for as long as they need to

- in disabled parking bays

Hi Iain

The link in Tim's message is excellent and gives you all the information you need to know. Have you got a holiday planned?

I have just had a new blue badge. It comes with a little blue cardboard 'timer' to set for the time you start parking. You can stay for 3 hours. I have a spare 'timer' now, so if you needed it, I could pop it in the post?

Thanks all for your answers. We are going to Flamingoland near Scarbourough in Sept and thought it would be best to be prepared. There is no time restrictions in Scotland but I believe this to be different in England. The reason I am asking is because on my last visit to England I noticed cardboard clock timers sitting on car dashboards (just as you described Litty) and wonder if I should be doing the same? Thanks for your offer of a spare timer Litty. I'll send you a message with my address thanks. I'll also a look at your link Tim thanks.

Hello Iain

The best thing you can do is contact the blue badge authority at Scarborough, ask them for a blue badge leaflet. This will tell you what you can and can't do.

Take care

Thanks for the info Carol. You suggest contacting the autoroties in Scarborough. Does this mean that different authoroties in England have different rules regarding blue badge use? The info I read on Tims link I think applies to all of England appart from some areas around London.

I have to correct myself for saying that there are no parking restrictions for blue badge holders in Scotland. The same rules apply for 'no loading' restrictions in Scotland as in England and Wales. Sorry.

As I understand it, you don't need to display the timer card if you are in a designated disabled parking space (in England). Parking in Pay and Display and on single yellow lines, you should always display the timer card.

Note also, that the three hour rule is two hours for non-Westminster Council folk (when parking in Westminster) - even in designated blue badge parking spaces..
