FEEDING AND CHOKING

Hello everyone

I was prompted to write this post as Pat, in another post had mentioned he husband uses a straw.

SALT advised us against using a straw or beakers/cups with a spout as they caused drink or purée foods to go 'down the wrong way', my husband would then choke. Due to the Ataxia, his throat muscles have a delayed reaction and let food etc slip down uncontrolled. I do urge anyone with choking and swelling problems to contact the Speech and Language at an early stage.

He now has a PEG J and no longer takes anything orally, massive step I know, but in true style he's taken it all in his stride. Originally he did have very small amounts of food thickened purée food, but after his last admission into hospital he's given that up with the doctors advice.

Does anyone else share the same 😀
