knee replacement with ataxia

I am yet undiagnosed but my neurologist thinks I have sca 6. I have osteoarthritis in my knees and it is becoming more painful to walk. Has anyone with ataxia had knee replacement surgery? Thanks!

Yes I have had a knee replacement and all is well with no pain. If you go ahead with the op be aware that you have to do certain exercises afterwards which can be difficult to do but they must be done

Good luck. Ted

Apparently your surgeon and anaesthetist must be made aware that you have ataxia as different anaesthetic needs to be used when you have surgery - good luck

Sorry to be depressing but this is a very good point. My Dad died this way after a routine operation because he aspirated twice in the recovery room.

yes I had knee replacement surgery some time ago-dont do like I did I finally had it done when I could hardly walk and it improved my mobility no end. It is painful but beneficial in the long term. I only had one knee done- some surgeons do both at the same time. You need to do quads exercises to help the muscles from now on- they may book you in for quads exercises before they operate. I came out on crutches . could not drive for 3 months but my knees are fine so go for it !! all the best Sylviax

Thank you for all the responses. Zigalig, what precautions are necessary for the anesthesia? Unfortunately, most of the doctors or therapists that I visit know very little, if anything about SCA. Sometimes I feel like giving them a little summary sheet explaining it! Regarding the recovery and excercises post surgery, I am most worried about keeping my balance in doing them.

Hi Mollymeer, I am not sure which anaesthesia but phone Ataxia UK and explain about the operation, they will provide you with literature (a summary sheet) explaining ataxia, and the anaesthetist will know - I am off on holiday for 2 weeks at the weekend so won't get much internet so my best wishes - when is your op scheduled for?

Unfortunately you have to assume that you probably know more about ataxia and it was too late for my Dad but never be embarrassed to say. I think if you can explain ataxia weakens throat muscles so spinal anaesthetics better.
