Hi anihol

I have never heard of SOB associated with ataxia. I am glad you have been to see your GP about this and that serious causes have been ruled out. I hope it settles soon.

Thanks for responding so quickly as I am seeing the consultant next week maybe he will have some idea of what the cause is. Anita

Hi anihol,

Yes. But it is definitely not a direct symptom of ataxia, but, in my case anyway, a consequence of now being less physically active than before. I suffered from childhood asthma, so have had to be quite active throughout my life to give my lungs a good, daily, workout (usually non-impact activities such as cycling/swimming). So now that I'm no longer as active, my lungs are not getting the exercise that they need. The answer for me, as directed by my GP, is to walk as far, and as fast, as is possible, every day (this also has the benefit of leaving me fitter in general, and in a better position to face the physical consequences of ataxia).

And, rather importantly I feel, exercise makes you mentally stronger too. Which definitely helped me accept/adapt to a physically-limited future.

Iain :)

Get your gp to check your heart lungs etc

My husband also suffers bouts of shortness of breath which seem to be increasing in frequency

Have you reported this as it could be tablet related?

The GP seems to think it's part of the ataxia but we will be speaking to the consultant when we see him

Lately, I have very brief almost involuntary breath inclusions, it's as if I am getting a whiff of wind from somewhere. Is this shortness of breath? I am sure its CA related. Never had it before. Probably something horrible afoot like shrinkage of the diaphragm muscles? Not sure.L,N

same with me. I have gone to the hospital & had my lungs checked and doctor said nothing to be worried about but he made a point that I need to rush to the hospital if this become worse. I've never had this symptoms before & it gets really uncomfortable & tiring.

I suffer from SOB often in the evening and when I have eaten a full meal or exerted myself (like climbing the stairs).A lie down for 15 min. or so helps as does eating little and often. My specialist says it could be caused by diversion of energy to digestion of food. Hope this helps.
