They are bad for anyone with cerebellar ataxia in the same Way that they are bad for anybody with a weakened system.

It's not wise to put ANY toxins in your stomach as your bodies performance reflects the stomachs contents

I'm sure 1cup of decaf a day is OK?

I know that caffeine is a trigger for my episodic ataxia, I only drink decaf now. Mxx

Just cos it makes you feel better doesn't mean it's good for you. Eg I had to give up cocaine, which is a shame as it made me feel on top of the world.

The short answer is, real coffee may or may not be bad for you. No one can tell you for sure. All you can do is be the best you can be. In other words probably best to reduce intake.

Hi Jeaniebean

Real coffee beans contain caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant. Like with any drug or medicine, everyone's body deals with it differently. While some people have nothing but positive effects when drinking caffeine, it can make other people feel dreadful e.g. irritability, anxiety, headaches, insomnia. Or indeed a mixture of the two.

This is the same for anybody, ataxia or not. However the consequences of drinking caffeine may be felt more acutely in people with cerebellar ataxia, for example increased irritability or anxiety can lead to tremulousness which can have a detrimental effect on co-ordination. Insomnia will make you feel more tired than usual.

If you are having any problems, switch to de-caff. Or have a combination of the two e.g. one cup of caffeinated coffee in the morning but de-caff for the rest of the day.

Do remember it is not only coffee that contains caffeine but tea, energy and fizzy drinks and chocolate as well.

Best Wishes

Harriet
