Admission to brompton

I have been asked to go into the Brompton for 5 - 7 days for testing. I have been ill for a good number of years now. I am reluctant and slightly scared by what they might diagnose me with and wonder if any of you have been admitted recently and can offer some guidance ? Also, although I fully understand, am not happy with the lack of visitors allowed !

I was admitted there for 3 weeks in 2018, they did a lot of tests lung function every week, chest X-ray, CT scan I was seen by a physio who did some breathing techniques with me. I also had to do a test where they wanted to see if I had exercise induced asthma by making me cycle on a bike while monitoring me closely

Well isn't it better to know if you have a serious illness? Then maybe a treatment could help you. If you have had it for a number of years at least it isn't serious enough to kill you - well at least not for a good while.

It talks about what happens in first severe asthma clinics. Some hospitals do hen as outpatients and others as inpatients. RBH tend to do as inpatient.

Diagnosis wise of you’re symptomatic whilst you’re there they’ll be able to tell you the cause and best treatment for what’s going on.

I had my DAP (difficult asthma protocol) with RBH back on 2017 as an inpatient and then when I moved had a sort of DAP (covering basics) at my new tertiary (2019) as an outpatient which they are now planning to do in full once my lungs are in the right place 😅🙈.

It’s nothing to be too worried about. The only thing I’d say is you’ll get more benefit if you’re having issues whilst you’re there 😅. For mine I was completely asymptomatic which caused issues until they saw me 2 months later and they realised what I’m like when symptomatic 😅🤦‍♀️.

When I was there I didn’t have any visitors even pre covid due to the distance from home 2+hrs, and it’s not unusual for that to be the case for other patients so others and video/FT etc is the way to go (they have internet 😉)

Dear Zachie

I have been treated by the RBH for the last 2 years for severe asthma, the staff there are wonderful. I had Xolair injections which didn’t work and now on Nucla injections, they don’t admit patients unless they absolutely have too.

How brilliant that you've got the RB! One of the best Pulmonary hospitals in the country. You don't want any visitors bringing outside bugs to you, staff or other patients do you so give us a daily update on yr mobile and we'll be your visitors 😀

I think having all those investigations as an inpatient makes perfect sense. I kept travelling up to get them and it was exhausting and expensive. Take advantage of it. We are very lucky to have access such a brilliant NHS hospital. Go for it!

My consultant is at the Brompton, and I have been there many times for all sorts of tests and when I was on a clinical trial for asthma treatment. I have not been an in-patient, but the Brompton is at the cutting edge of Lung diagnosis and treatment in the UK. Being in hospital is scary and never nice. But being able to go to such a fabulous hospital even though it is a rabbit warren! is the best thing you can do for yourself. The lack of visitors is upsetting, but your days will be really busy with all the testing that they will do. The time will pass quickly and you may get some answers and treatment that you wouldn't otherwise have had. Good Luck
