Do you have an annual asthma review with an asthma nurse? Any decline in your asthma control should be monitored by your AN or doctor. That should be your first port of call, but it doesn't hurt to know what options should be available to you.
The natural approach i definitely use myself, that Robert has highlighted, however I have regular reviews with my AN and take a variety of asthma meds.
Are you an a combination inhaler, containing steroids and a long acting bronchodilator? There are a variety available and trial and error will isolate the best one for you. A change of a combination inhaler may be what's needed if you're already on one.
The next step after trying combination inhalers would be a LAMA inhaler, such as Spiriva. These are used when asthma is difficult to control.
Beyond that your GP should be referring you to a consultant if your asthma isn't controlled by combination and LAMA inhalers. Biologics are available but a strict criteria has to be met in terms of symptoms, assessed by tests, and are only prescribed by a consultant.
Your sub type of asthma (phenotype) will have a bearing on what meds are suitable for you. Something to discuss with your AN or doctor.
This bit is so important "The natural approach i definitely use myself, that Robert has highlighted, however I have regular reviews with my AN and take a variety of asthma meds." so thank you for highlighting it!
So many people seem to think that natural things alone can "cure" asthma or be used instead of asthma treatments.
By all means people can and should do what suits them with investigating other things alongside the medications (as you do, Poobah), while of course bearing in mind individuality in terms of benefits and potential triggers (something I know you're also highly aware of).....but solely natural methods are not a replacement for asthma meds and, if they do "cure" asthma then it wasn't asthma in the first place!
(I know you know this - just so pleased to see it made clear!)
Poobah covered everything I'd say! I just wanted to chime in and agree that you should get a review as soon as possible and get an action plan in place since it sounds like your asthma is worsening and you may need to add some meds to your regimen. It can definitely be dangerous to be deteriorating without being under careful care by a GP or pulmonologist so I'd ring the hotline and chat with a nurse and get in with a doctor as soon as you can.
