Split fingertips?

I was diagnosed with adult onset asthma 2 years ago following a couple of bouts of pneumonia. I am In the severe category as I have pretty brutal attacks.

What I have noticed is that an attack is accompanied with split fingertips. Especially my thumb and forefinger. I don’t notice any obvious cyanosis. And I do know what I am looking for as I have been a nurse for 20 years.

Does anyone get similar symptoms? At first I thought it was due to the prednisolone, but my fingertips all split this weekend and I am back on steroids today following another attack.

If they are a warning sign it’s handy I suppose, albeit quite sore!

I take Respimat, Montelukast, Relvar and obvs Salbutamol

Hi Helsmac. I do get spilt fingertips and it is particularly on the thumb and forefinger though I’ve never thought about it being prodromal. I was born with eczema and I have to keep moisturised so I just thought of it as “working hands”. It happens in the winter mostly and my heels used to crack too which was painful. I suppose it is worth keeping a bit of a note to see if it is a pattern that correlates to asthma attacks. I hope you feel better soon

Thanks I also thought it to be occupational as I’m a nurse and none of us have very pretty hands! That said I had to shield through the worst of the pandemic and I still got them then. I also suffer with Psoriasis and have had it badly on my feet last year but my hands have never been affected.

I will watch and wait!!

Yes. I am also a nurse. It takes its toll on your hands. I too have been shielding but with all the extra cleaning at home it hasn’t really given my skin much rest. Yes wstch amd wait it is then!
