Constant throat clearing issues

O K this by way of an update.

I have been trying to stick with the asthma inhaler for my chronic throat clearing, but in all honesty I think it is making it worse, Looked up and read this today on an ashtma website. :-

Can steroid inhalers cause throat problems?

It has long been known that one of the most common adverse effects of inhaled steroid therapy is irritation of the upper aerodigestive tract. Common symptoms include pharyngitis, hoarseness, throat clearing, and cough. These symptoms occur with all steroid inhalant preparations, and appear to be dose related.

I think I am going to have to stop using at least for the time being. for a start I don't have any shortness of breath, breathing issues so I am beginning to think I was diagnosed using this incorrectly.

I would still hazard a guess it's linked to post nasal drip or silent reflux as throat clearing is very very common in both of those.

For post nasal drip, I'd use a sinus rinse like NeilMed twice a day and afterwards use the Avamys (I think the doctor prescribed that?).

For silent reflux I'd try gaviscon 4 times a day for a couple of weeks and see if it helps. If it does maybe discuss with the GP to see if they can give you something longer lasting.

Yes Dr prescribed Avamys I picked it up today and used this evening . I am beginning to think the silent reflux is also a possibility . Is Gaviscon best or PPI , Nexium , Guardium ? Thanks again for your message

I think a GP would expect someone to have tried the easily available treatments first, so like Gaviscon. I don't know about others but apparently gaviscon liquid is better than the tablets. If that works when taken regularly then doctors seem happy (based on friends/family experiences) to prescribe PPIs. But I don't know if this is an official process or anything.

I too have problems with throat clearing/hoarsness but put it down to my steroid inhaler, maybe post nasal drip. I take Gaviscon. I use to take Zantac on the odd occasion, which worked for reflux but it has been taken off the market. Have been given PPI's but they don't work the same,so am now sticking to Gaviscon. PPI's are great but only suppose to be used short term, also they can stop absorption of nutrients as you cut some acid in your stomach,we need some acid in stomach to absorb essential nutrients,eg magnesium. So difficult, swings and roundabouts with medication etc. I took Nexium years ago, came off it as had all sorts of side effects. I would try the Avamys first, see if that works, then give some Gaviscon a try. We are all different though and unfortunately a side effect of steroids is reflux. So difficult and so much information out there it makes your head spin!! Sinus rinse good too!! Also if it is a steroid inhaler,if you don't rinse properly after using your inhaler, you can get thrush in your mouth. I always rinse, then brush my teeth. Sorry i have gone on!!

I suffer from this terribly whenever I’m put of dry powder inhalers. I wouldn’t stop taking it without having a word with your GP or nurse though. (It can also be reflux/GERD and post nasal drip). Hope you get it sorted.

I too have been struggling with long term throat clearing and my GP suspects its post nasal drip linked to allergies. I’m also nasal rinsing daily with a Neti pot then using Rinatec nasal spray. It definitely helps and throat clearing has reduced. They are hoping that if we can clear the post nasal drip then the Asthma will settle down. It’s exhausting isn’t it and I hope you improve,

What is rinatec?

in reply to gillsky8

It’s a nasal spray (ipratopium bromide) which reduces inflammation of the nose which could be caused by allergies. So my understanding is that in theory it should stop post nasal drip. This is the 3rd nasal spray that they have prescribed so I’m hoping it continues to work.

Exactly the same for me. Its a toss up between throat clearing...hoarseness versus asthma. Im currently reducing my dosage over time to see if it helps. Gargling regularly but not much difference. I would recommend clear teas though such as ginger...and liquorice...lemon balm.

Regarding the throat clearing, does anyone find it’s worse just after eating? I always have to cough and try to clear my tubes after eating. I wonder why this is?

Yes exactly the same !! Very odd ! It is nice to know I’m not alone with this though. At nighttime I have no problem whatsoever, lying flat to sleep does not make it worse. In fact I’d say it stops when I lay down. But within a minute or so of being up and about it starts again . Very frustrating!!!!

I’m the same. I’m fine when I’m lying down although I have to sleep on my side, I wake up unable to breathe if I’m on my back. I’d like to know what’s causing it. The fact that it happens when I eat sort of points to reflux, but I’m on lanzoprazole so why doesn’t that help? It’s very confusing and frustrating like you say.

Hi, I have been having issues for exactly 12 months now. My asthma hasn’t bothered me for 35 years (I’m 36) this time last year I was running half marathons! I was noticing my asthma a little at my feb 2019 asthma check, so the asthma nurse put me on a preventer (purple) can’t remember the name but it was a steroid one. By March my throat was awful I couldn’t talk and breathing worse than ever, I had chest x-ray and ecg all clear never wheezed just felt very inflamed and and irritated from throat down to chest! Stopped the preventer as I decided it was making everything worse and got loads better! Then dr put me on big standard be citied brown preventer which I started taking religiously from Oct again by Dec all the symptoms can back so stopped that! It’s taken until this week but I’m a million times better so I have decided that preventers make me worse and without doubt have caused the throat problems, even with rinsing my mouth out after using! I’m still aware of my asthma which is not fun but I’m referred to respiratory now but it’s interesting how at my worst is whilst using inhalers! Even my gp and asthma nurse agrees,
