Contraceptive pill

Hi I have been experiencing asthma symptoms the past week when my asthma is normally well controlled. My doctor took me off the combined contraceptive pill a couple of weeks ago as it was giving me hormonal headaches and has now put me on the mini pill which has only one hormone?

Can the change of pill and hormones have caused my asthma flare up? If so will I need to change back to combined pill or will it settle down.

Thanks any help appreciated.

HelloI’m sorry I can’t comment on the contraceptive pill as such (way too old!😜) but my hormones definitely play havoc with my asthma on a monthly basis.

It’s certainly worth considering and I’m not sure that medics always give it the credit it deserves.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Take care 😊

Pipsqueak77 thank you at least I’m not the only one then 😂 it is either my hormones or my acid reflux which can be so bad at times so not sure which one it is as I have the two happening at the minute.

Take care

Hi ClinicL,

Hormone changes can definitely play a part in asthma symptoms. Im currently wondering if going on the pill will help as I definitely have worsening symptoms once a month. As Pipsqueak says I don't think hormones are always given enough attention with asthmatics. X

Thanks for your reply. It might have been me being off the pill for two weeks which had led to my asthma flaring up x

Hi, my asthma has been so much better since I went on the combined pill a year ago. I didn't even realise my hormones were a trigger for me until they stopped being a trigger! It's probably different for everyone, but for me the combined pill has made a huge difference.

Thank you. I hope the mini pill has the same effect as the combined pill.

Hi, yes I believe that Female hormones can directly affect asthma, particularly oestrogen. I did some research into this when I went into Menopuase as my asthma symptoms have been so much worse since. Apparently the oestrogen has some sort of relaxing effect on the lungs and after a drop in oestrogen it can exacerbate asthma. Hopefully when your body adjusts you will settle down.

Thank you. Yes that’s what I’m hoping once my body gets used to the mini pill I’m hoping it all settles down. Fingers crossed.
